Care leavers and care experienced students

Committed to providing support

University College Birmingham is committed to providing support to our students who are Care Experienced or Care Leavers. We define a care leaver as a young person over the age of 16 who has been in care of the local authority and/or Health and Social Care Trust for at least 13 weeks since the age of 14.

We define a care experienced student as an individual who has been in care at any stage in their life, no matter how short a period. If this applies to you, we encourage you to look at the support we can offer.

Transitioning from school/college to university

  • We have a single point of contact for care-experienced people, care leavers and their advisers (applying no strict definition on what we mean by care experienced or care leaver). This point of contact is our Safeguarding Manager (Designated Safeguarding Lead) Natalie Stanley (n.stanley@ucb.ac.uk) who will be able to support anyone with queries relating to accessing higher education. You can also contact Natalie to arrange a tour around our campus and to meet relevant support staff to understand more about what support is available to you prior to starting with us.
