Trainee chef Nathan Lane picked up some tops tips from a culinary legend when he attended a cooking master class.

Nathan, a Level 2 Professional Cookery student at UCB, was thrilled to meet Marco Pierre White at the celebrity chef’s eponymous restaurant at The Cube in Birmingham.

The 17-year-old was invited to the session as a reward for his good work at UCB’s College of Food and watched Pierre White cook a dish of lobster macaroni and explain how to make the perfect roux sauce.

Nathan asked the chef, famous for being the first Briton to win three Michelin stars, if he ever envisaged his life would map out as it has.

“He said, ‘Not really. I just did it to earn money!’ He said the hours were horrendous when he was young.”

Nathan said he would like to follow the great chef’s lead by working hard in the industry before branching out on his own to set up a restaurant.
