Praise for UCB volunteers at Birmingham Inclusive Sports Festival

Eager young volunteers from University College Birmingham provided a welcome helping hand at an event showcasing disability sports in the city.

Eight Level 3 Sport students offered their support at the 2019 Birmingham Inclusive Sports Festival held at the Doug Ellis Sports Centre in Perry Barr earlier this autumn.

The event, organised by Sport Birmingham, saw more than 150 attendees try a range of different sporting activities ranging from boccia and boxercise to powerchair football and wheelchair rugby.

Having taken part in training prior to the event, the students supported those taking part in the sports taster sessions on the day as well as providing help setting up and stewarding.

Helping out at the festival were Caitlin White, Tiawana Huntley, Simran Sandhu, Olivia Lowe, Katie Wilson, Liam Yates, Adam Nesbitt and Aaliyah Browne.

“The staff were great, very organised and friendly to work with,” said Aaliyah. “My time had definitely been worthwhile.”

Alice Trevallion, project coordinator at Sport Birmingham, praised the volunteers for their assistance at the festival.

"The event ran smoothly with attendees leaving happy and encouraged by the day – this came down to the activities available to them, but also the help we received behind the scenes in running the event," she said.

"Managing the volunteer group myself, I found the UCB students very personable and happy to help, while being flexible as the day progressed and showing an interest in the sports on offer.

"The deliverers found their engagement very useful and some expressed interest in opening up opportunities for the students to volunteer with them in the future."
