New Moss House campus opens doors to students and staff

Today marks the opening of our new £44 million Moss House - complete with some of the best learning facilities available to UK university students.

Moss House is the latest phase of a £130 million investment into the University since 2014 and features a host of cutting edge facilities for everything from nursing and social work to physiotherapy and sport and fitness.

Located at the junction of George Street and Holland Street, the four-storey campus is just a stone’s throw from the University’s three other campuses – McIntyre House, Summer Row and Richmond House – and 10 minutes’ walk from Birmingham city centre.

Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Michael Harkin said Moss House was three years in the making to ensure the University continued to deliver the very best learning experience for students.

“It’s fantastic to open the doors to our new campus, which will give students access to incredible teaching and training facilities,” he said.

“For instance, the highly competitive industry of professional sport demands the best talent and Moss House ensures students on sports-related degrees have every opportunity to excel.

“Students not only have use of a 35-metre indoor running track for assessing speed and performance, but a Human Performance Laboratory with top-range anti-gravity treadmill, a cutting-edge gym and injury and massage clinics.

“There is also a replica hospital ward and nursing simulation suite to enhance and support our wide range of healthcare degree courses, including Adult Nursing, Physiotherapy, Social Work and Health and Social Care.

“We pride ourselves on our vocational degree courses that prepare graduates for real-life work in growing industries and sectors. Moss House will play a huge part in preparing our students for their placements and future careers and reinforce our commitment to widening participation in education.

“It is also another major investment in Birmingham's vibrant knowledge-based economy.”

First-class learning support

Moss House has three 100-seat lecture theatres and a range of multi-faceted learning facilities including glazed study pods to discuss projects and mind-map ideas and an exhibition space to showcase to assessors and prospective employers.

There are also plenty of break-out spaces for informal catch-ups with colleagues and lecturers and students can enjoy The Dining Room restaurant with its industrial pizza oven, The Living Room coffee shop and spacious landscaped, biodiverse courtyard.

Moss House is also home to hired@UCB, the University’s careers, employability and placements service for students and alumni, and Enterprise Hive, which helps budding entrepreneurs with their start-ups.

Sustainable campus

University College Birmingham takes sustainability very seriously and Moss House is the perfect example of this.

For starters, all waste will be recycled or processed into energy to assist in providing electricity to around 30,000 local homes within the county.

The campus also has designated electric vehicle charging points, photovoltaic solar panels, recycling stations, smart lighting, and sensor and timer taps to minimise water waste.
