Double trouble – UCB students are contenders for UK's top baking awards

Not one, but two top bakery students are up for ‘Rising Star’ at the prestigious Baking Industry Awards taking place this September.

The event is known for spotting true leaders, innovators and cutting-edge inventions of the modern baking industry, with categories ranging from Baker of the Year to Speciality Bread Product of the Year. This year, TV and stage star Denise Van Outen will be the compére.

Hopes are high for UCB’s Jessica Dalton and Megan Roberts taking two out of three of the finalist spots in the rising star category, which honours go-getting young talent expected to seriously contribute to the future of the industry.

“I never expected to be selected for the final as I assumed most applications were coming from professionals,” said Jessica, who has gained increasing recognition for her baking while at UCB. “It’s a huge achievement to have made it this far, so whatever happens on the day, I’ll be happy.”

Both BSc Bakery and Patisserie Technology foundation degree students went through a rigorous application process to make the grade, including a panel interview in London – an exercise made all the more intimidating as applications were open to bakers working at any level.

However, the pair’s impeccable record of awards and nerves of steel saw them coming up trumps and they are now prepping for a night to remember at the glitzy awards ceremony at Mayfair’s London Hilton on September 6.

Megan knows just how exciting the atmosphere at the event is after also making it to the final last year.

“I’m very, very nervous, but knowing how amazing the evening is, I’m excited too,” said Megan. “I’m honoured to have been selected as a finalist and even more delighted to be attending the event with Jess.”
