Donations for Christmas food bank appeal

Read time: approx 1 mins

University staff and students are being urged to donate canned food to help people facing financial difficulties in Birmingham.

UCB is joining Aston UniversityBirmingham City University and Newman University in the inaugural University Canned Food Drive Challenge.

All the collected canned food will go to Birmingham Central Foodbank and Aston & Nechells Foodbank and will serve the agencies they work with in the city. The initiative is run by local churches across central Birmingham including Ladywood, Edgbaston, Winson Green, Spring Hill and Hockley working alongside grassroots community organisations, statutory agencies, frontline care professionals, schools and businesses.

There are four collection bins at UCB where donations can be made (cans and packets – no glass, please):

  • Richmond House - Reception
  • McIntyre House - Reception
  • Summer Row – Reception – Guild – Student Services
  • The Maltings – Reception

The food parcels contain three-day provision of nutritionally balanced non-perishable tinned and dried foods. Dietary requirements can also be catered for (such as vegetarian and diabetic) and each parcel is packed according to the number of adults and children in the family.

A typical parcel might include: cereal, soup, pasta, rice, pasta sauce, beans, tinned meat, tinned vegetables, tea/coffee, sugar and biscuits.
