Cutting-edge equipment for baking brilliance

Our on-site baking and product development laboratories at University College Birmingham provide the perfect environment for our baking and confectionery students to master their craft.

Our baking facilities offer everything from the latest industrial ovens and high-speed mixers to laser volume measuring and dough and flour rheology testing equipment, as well as specialist chocolate production and tempering equipment.

You will also have the chance to see your creations up for sale on the shelves of our Cakes and Bakes shop, which sells a wide range of bread and baked goods made by our students.

University College Birmingham has great connections within the bakery industry. It keeps up-to-date on current trends and has fantastic facilities for students. It has everything a student might need for a successful career in the industry.

Cakes and Bakes

Cakes and Bakes is University College Birmingham’s own bakery, patisserie and confectionery shop, selling high-quality products at bargain prices.

The shop, situated on the ground floor of the Summer Row building, is open to the general public, students and staff during term time.

It sells a variety of delicious breads, including craft breads and speciality loaves and rolls, buns, cakes, tarts and biscuits, chocolate bars and lollies as well as ready meals, all produced by our trainee chefs and bakers under expert professional guidance.

The range of products changes from day to day. Seasonal goods are available in the run-up to special occasions such as Christmas and Easter. Speciality items appear on the shelves each week, so it's always worth popping in to see what's on offer.

Opening times (term time only)

  • Monday to Thursday – 10.30am-4pm
  • Friday – 10.30am-3.30pm
  • Saturday and Sunday – closed
