Experience a day in the life at our taster days
To ensure you gain a thorough insight into life as a college student and what it’s like to study with us, we are holding a series of virtual online taster days. You will benefit enormously from attending all three sessions as you’ll meet your new classmates and get involved with practical activities that are part of your course.
Taster days include:
- Practical activities: interactive course-specific taster sessions that will enable you to participate in a workshop or practical session
- Guest speakers: hear from current students and students who have completed the course, and be inspired to take the next step to achieving your career goals
- Icebreaker: meet your tutors and future classmates

Access to Higher Education and Pre-Access
- Monday 15 June 4-5pm - Meet your tutors and new classmates, receive further course information and be inspired by current students’ stories. Also, find out more about the support available to you as a student
- Monday 29 June 1-2pm – Progression after your course –think about your future career and hear about your options, including nursing, paramedic, midwife, social worker and occupational therapist
Early Years and Childcare
- Monday 15 June 1-2pm - Meet your tutors and new classmates, learn about the five types of play and take part in a scavenger hunt. You might make friends for life! Access your resources for the event, here
- Monday 22 June 1-2pm - ‘Make a rabbit!’ – join in with this interactive practical activity. Plus, be inspired by previous Early Years students - find out where your future can lead!
- Monday 29 June 1-2pm - An introduction to Makaton (a unique language) and how you can use it. Plus, hear from industry guest speaker Emma King and discover how you can make a difference in the future
Health and Social Care
- Monday 15 June 1-2pm - Meet your tutors and new classmates – break the ice – learn about the basics of handwashing, infection control and prevention, and communication. Plus, join in a live quiz (access this in advance, here)
- Monday 22 June 1-2pm - Be inspired by previous Health and Social Care students - find out where your future can lead!
- Monday 29 June 1-2pm – Progression after your course –think about your future career and hear about your options, including nursing, paramedic, midwife, social worker and occupational therapist
Bakery
- Thursday 25 June 1-3pm – After meeting your tutors, take a virtual tour of the bakery and be inspired with a bread-based practical
- Thursday 2 July 1-3pm – Hear from a range of guest speakers, including former students Natalie Brown and Aliya Yasmeen, and discover what your future could hold. Test your knowledge through an interactive bakery quiz. Prepare for the session next week and find out your list of ingredients here
- Thursday 9 July 2-4pm – Learn more practical skills through an interactive bake along - cupcakes and sugar paste demonstration. There’s also a chance to ask any final questions
Chef and RACA
- Thursday 25 June 1-3pm – Hear all about the course from current student, Yamkela Keva, learn about UCB’s Pro-Cookery Foundation, participate in a virtual tour of the College and receive a demonstration focusing on cinnamon rolls made with an enriched dough
- Thursday 2 July 1-3pm – Be inspired by former student and Bocuse d’Or finalist, Nathan Lane, learn some skills, test your knowledge through an interactive quiz, and receive a live demonstration on preparing and cooking a chicken escalope
- Thursday 9 July 2-4pm – Hear from industry guest speaker, Peter Jackson, Sous Chef from Carters in Moseley and enjoy further demonstrations - profiteroles, diplomat cream and chocolate sauce, plus a fruit roulade
Food and Beverage
- Thursday 25 June 1-3pm – Meet your new classmates, take part in a virtual tour and watch a demonstration of 3 popular cocktails being made. Over to you, as you think of a cocktail that you would like to be made at the next taster day!
- Thursday 2 July 1-3pm – Your cocktail ideas made to order, plus, hear from previous students and discover more about your future career opportunities. You’ll also learn more about the course from previous students
- Thursday 9 July 2-4pm – Test your knowledge through an interactive quiz and your chance to ask any final questions
Hospitality with Events
- Thursday 25 June 1-3pm – Meet your new classmates, take part in a virtual tour and watch a demonstration of 3 popular cocktails being made. Over to you, as you think of a cocktail that you would like to be made at the next taster day!
- Thursday 2 July 1-3pm – Your chance to prepare an iced coffee and floater coffee, plus you will hear from current students and discover more about the course
- Thursday 9 July 2-4pm – Test your industry knowledge through an interactive quiz and learn about your summer project, ‘Review a Restaurant of your Choice’
Business
- Wednesday 24 June 1-2pm – Meet your tutors and new classmates, be inspired by a current business student and prepare for your transition to college
- Wednesday 1 July 1-2pm – ‘Have I got Business News for you!’ – hear about the topical issues within business currently and understand the world of business, plus test your industry knowledge with an interactive quiz
- Wednesday 8 July 1-2pm – Create, develop and inspire your future classmates when you go ‘Into the Dragon’s Den’ to present your amazing business idea! Plus, discover where your future can lead with a discussion on options after your studies
Business and Finance
- Wednesday 24 June 1-2pm - Meet your tutors and new classmates, be inspired by a current business and finance student and prepare to step up to Level 3 in September
- Wednesday 1 July 1-2pm – ‘Have I got Business News for you!’ – hear about the topical issues within the business and finance sector currently and understand the world of business, plus test your industry knowledge with an interactive quiz
- Wednesday 8 July 1-2pm – Spotlight on future career pathways and an in-depth look at the course modules and assessment. Plus, it’s your time to shine – design your own financial budgeting app and present to your classmates
Computing and ICT
- Wednesday 24 June 1-2pm – Meet your new classmates and jump straight into a mini lecture or practical activity – develop algorithms, learn the principles of computer science and focus on data and operations
- Wednesday 1 July 1-2pm – Delve deeper into the course and hear more about computing and ICT – computer architecture, text representation and units of digital dates
Cabin Crew and Tourism
- Friday 26 June 1-2pm – Ice breaker and then jump straight into a mini lecture or practical activity – test your knowledge through an interactive quiz, learn the phonetic alphabet and crack the code. Plus, prepare a welcome meeting or cabin crew safety demonstration to share on the day. Find some hints and tips, here.
Sport
- Tuesday 16 June 1-3pm – Meet your tutors and new classmates and participate in an interactive practical session – an introduction to anatomy and physiology
- Tuesday 30 June 1-3pm – Introducing fitness – practical activity focusing on measuring heart rates and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE)
- Tuesday 14 July 1-3pm – Defining your future career path through a skills audit, plus get your questions answered by current UCB students
Boxing
- Wednesday 15 July 1-3pm – Introduction to Level 2 Gym Instructors course, plus mini lecture on anatomy, physiology and fitness and how they link to elite boxing performance, plus you will receive further information regarding UCB’s facilities and further opportunities for training
Beauty Therapy
- Monday 29 June 1-3pm – Meet your tutors and classmates, ask any questions about the course, and participate in a mock lecture and practical activity – File and Polish. Click here for the resources you will need on the day.
