Another taste of success for UCB baker Megan Roberts

Star baker Megan Roberts is once again preparing to represent UCB in the finals of a national competition.

The 19-year-old from Streetly is one of only three people nationwide on the shortlist for the Baking Industry Award’s Rising Star category.

The Rising Star award is open to all ages, but is aimed at those in work, training or bakery college who are able to demonstrate their achievements during the past three years. The ultimate honour is given to the person the judges believe will contribute to shaping the future of the baking industry.

Megan, who combines her studies with working full-time as a commis chef at Malmaison Birmingham, completed the Level 3 Diploma in Professional Bakery at UCB. She is now about to embark on the foundation degree in Bakery and Patisserie Technology. 

She was recently a finalist in Le Cordon Bleu’s UK Scholarship Award, where she competed for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to win a scholarship worth £35,000. 

The former Streetly Academy pupil said: “I’m used to working in a high pressure environment, but that was like nothing I’d ever experienced. It has made me more determined to achieve something in this industry.” 

The Bakery Industry Awards take place on September 7 at the London Hilton.

Dawn Gemmell, Assistant Dean of UCB’s College of Food, will be supporting Megan at the ceremony. She said: “These awards are a huge thing for the industry. Megan is very highly motivated to achieve, and she combines this with enthusiasm and experience. She has a demanding job which she manages alongside her studies. I know she will go far.”
