Jon Melville
Expert in sustainable practice
Jon was involved in the first bridge designs using carbon fibre composites and the design and construction of what was then the largest contaminated material landfill site in Europe.
His fascinating research around sustainability includes looking at the real carbon footprint of electric versus petrol cars and even how to repurpose egg and mollusc shells in construction materials.
Jon said: “I am passionate about my students and their success."
“My absolute priority is that they achieve what they need to attain their future goals, involving liaison with employers to ensure student outcomes are fit for purpose."
“We also ensure environmental sustainability and contemporary technologies are embedded into everything we do.”
He said there were many advantages to choosing to study engineering and construction at University College Birmingham.
“We have small group sizes, access to help and support, lots of time spent with tutors, practical activities rather than lengthy lectures, and highly-qualified teaching staff at the cutting-edge,” he said.
“We also have strong links with industry for placements and employment.”
