Claire McCullagh

Course lead and senior lecturer (paramedic science)

Claire's journey to becoming an experienced parademic literally started on the day of the 7/7 London bombings in 2005. A bus driver in the capital, she found herself transporting hundreds of people out of the city to safety, after which she had one vision in mind - to make a difference and save lives.

With nearly two decades of experience, Claire is now passing on her knowledge and skills by leading and teaching on the new Paramedic Science BSc (Hons) degree at University College Birmingham, which welcomes its first cohort in September 2024.

"Paramedics are the first responders in critical situations," she said. "Quick thinking, medical skills, and compassionate care can save lives and alleviate suffering, leaving an indelible positive impact on individuals and their families. As paramedics, we encounter diverse medical situations, from accidents to medical emergencies, ensuring that no two days are the same. This variety keeps the job interesting and exciting.

She said working alongside other healthcare professionals, law enforcement and firefighters also fostered a strong sense of camaraderie. "Together, you'll tackle challenges and make a real difference as a cohesive team," she said.

"Paramedics serve as pillars of their communities, fostering trust and a sense of security among the public. The gratitude and respect you receive from your community can be immensely fulfilling."

She added that the profession nurtured qualities like resilience and empathy. "It developed in me a deeper understanding of the human experience and the strength to handle adversity," she said. "It also led me on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. By studing paramedic science, you'll learn to manage stress, make critical decisions under pressure, and become a more compassionate and understanding individual.

"In a world where compassion and skillful intervention can be the difference between life and death, choosing to study to be a paramedic is an incredible journey towards a purposeful, meaningful and inspirational career. It's an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most."
