The University is celebrating after being awarded Centre of Excellence status by the Institute of Travel and Tourism.

The prestigious award recognises all programmes across tourism, aviation, hospitality, events and related areas at UCB.

Paul Russell, Dean of the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Events Management, said the award reflected the high standard of course provision at UCB and the expertise and commitment of academic staff.

He said: “Very few institutions in the UK have received this award so we are delighted to win official recognition as a Centre of Excellence.”

Paul congratulated all staff who were involved in the successful application to the Institute of Travel and Tourism (ITT), including Sally Ievers, postgraduate tourism programme manager.

The University becomes a member of the ITT Education and Training Committee and will be invited to nominate a student as a designated ITT Student of the Year, the award to be presented at the organisation’s annual summer party at the House of Commons.

The ITT is the only professional membership body for individuals and tourism educators in the UK travel and tourism industry and is dedicated to developing and maintain high professional standards.

Centres of Excellence status recognises “leading universities keen on working particularly closely with the Institute.”

Successful institutions receive support in organising industrial placements and enjoy access to high level industry speakers and senior industry figures for research purposes.
