Students collaborate on foodie photoshoot

Read time: approx 1 mins

UCB Food and Consumer Management teamed up with photography students at Sandwell College to create professional photographs for recipes they created.

They were challenged to design and develop a recipe for the Sainsbury’s recipe magazine. Taking inspiration from celebrity chefs, such as the styles and ideas of Nigella Lawson and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, they then cooked their chosen recipe ready for Sandwell’s photography students to work their magic.

Students from both institutions discussed what could be done to create the ideal set-up for the shoot to get the best images possible. This included camera angle, colour influences, lighting and shadow, themes, props, and culinary extras to help enhance the dish and make it look as delicious as possible. UCB student Victoria Church cooked rhubarb and blood orange crumble, which was then photographed by Neil Kingsbury.

This is a great practical opportunity for both UCB students and Sandwell College. Not only does this give them experience with food photography shoots in a professional setting, but it also draws their attention to the avenues that their qualification can take them down when they consider their future career.
