Student charity events a huge success

Second year Marketing with Events Management students have raised over four thousand pounds for military charity Fisher House through the success of their live events.

As part of their assessment, students work to host successful live events with the aim of raising money for charity, and they are expected to do this without a budget.

One group were particularly successful with their event, having 120 guests in attendance and raising £2450.76 to donate to the Birmingham-based charity.

Sophie Plim, Samantha Taylor and Zoey Harris hosted an event at The Vaults in the Jewellery Quarter under the business name ROAR Promotions. ‘The Show’ was a themed night on the roaring twenties with a modern twist to appeal to current trends and a wider market. They supplied twenties-themed cocktails and entertainment, and their venue was specifically chosen for its underground bar and restaurant, which was reminiscent of the old speakeasies that were popular in this decade.

“‘The Show’ was a huge success and we are very proud of how hard we worked and what we achieved,” said Sophie, “especially since this was our first time organising an event. Not only did we raise a fantastic amount for charity, all the guests, sponsors and other people involved were very complimentary about the night.

“When we explained the fantastic work Fisher House does to help military patients, everyone was more than happy to donate to the cause. We hope we created an enriching and memorable experience.”

Gwyneth Stewart, Event Operations lecturer at UCB, said: “Students found it challenging to design and implement events with a zero budget. However, they found creative ways of raising money and controlling costs enabling a range of successful events to take place and a significant sum to be raised for Fisher House. Well done!”

Fisher House is a “home away from home” for military patients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and their loved ones. It allows patients to recuperate at the hospital knowing that their family is always nearby and able to give them any support they might need. It also has communal facilities for military patients to get out of the ward and spend time with families, friends and colleagues in a non-clinical environment.
