Specialist Hair and Media Make-up students showcase their skills!

Second year students in Specialist Hair and Media Make-up have been working towards their final exam for their Advanced Prosthetics and Casting module. The themes were Grimm’s Fairytales and Planetary Evolution.
In preparation for the exam, students not only had to design, sculpt, mould and cast their own prosthetics, but also come up with make-up, hair and costume design.
The official exam was held over two days (13th and 14th January) and took the form of an exhibition. The venue was The Mezzanine at Summer Row, and students worked on a chosen model for their final piece. Each model was required to wear at least one fully-prepared silicone prosthetic piece, with the potential to include two other prosthetics, such as bald caps, with materials and designs of their choice. Visitors and guests were able to come and admire their work and techniques throughout the process.
Marks were also awarded on how well the students’ models could showcase the prosthetics, so poses and stances were also rehearsed before the photo shoot to allow to the models to get into character!
Silicone is widely used within the make-up industry, in particular within TV and film. The students put in lots of hours outside of lectures in order to prepare for this and we are very impressed with their commitment. We are thrilled with their results – well done! In order to keep pace with the newest developments within the industry, lecturers took part in a four day master class with Neill Gorton, one of the industry’s lead prosthetic make-up specialists. Passing this knowledge onto students who are just about to embark on their own career in industry has proven very rewarding.
