The University’s trainee bakers and chefs joined food service and hospitality students in sweeping the board at a prestigious skills competition.
The culinary team staged a remarkable performance at the Hospitality and Catering Salon Culinaire 2016 at North Warwickshire and Hinckley College, winning more than 45 awards including Best Visiting College Team. Amazing cakes, slick service skills and expert chef techniques helped UCB to win a total of 26 medals including five golds, 12 silvers and 10 bronzes. The teams was also awarded 11 certificates of merit and a clutch of other awards.
There was a hat-trick of celebrations for 18-year-old Laura Phillips. The Food and Beverage Level 3 student won gold in the Cocktail and Coffee category and also won Best Front of House Student and Best Overall Student.
UCB’s four other golds went to: Jessica Dalton and Katrina Gaunt (both Student Celebration cake); Sonia Hopkins (Open Celebration cake); and Gregory Evans (Chicken Cuts skills). Katrina also won Best in Class.
Jessica, 19, a UCB bakery apprentice, caught the judges’ eye with her spectacular recreation of the Eiffel Tower made entirely from royal icing.
Chef Mat Shropshall, UCB’s Culinary Team Manager, said: “We are very proud of all of the students from Bakery, Front of House and Chefs courses who competed at the North Warwickshire Salon Culinaire.
“With more than 40-plus awards from gold medals to certificates of merit and the Best College Award, it shows the quality and commitment of UCB students. We are always delighted to continue to support and develop future talent in culinary competition”
