UCB staff member Gemma Richmond scooped a clutch of prizes at the NEC Beauty UK Show.

Gemma, who is a part-time Protocol lecturer, was presented with first and second place prizes for her participation in the National Make-up Artists Awards 2014.

She won first place in the ‘Best Professional Make-Up Artist Bridal Look’ category, creating a classical, elegant look incorporating make-up, hair and outfit perfect for any bride on her big day. She also came second in the ‘Fantasy Game of Thrones’ category where competitors were challenged with unleashing their creative flair to design a whole new look for the popular television series.

Out of the 55 entrants, the judges also recognised Gemma’s top quality talent and awarded her the title of National Professional Make-Up Artist of the Year 2014.

“I was given two models to create two very different looks on,” said Gemma. “It was a hot day with minimal working space, but I’m pleased that my hard work paid off. The judging panel included some highly regarded industry professionals, so to have won these awards means a great deal to me.

“The reason why I entered is because I’m always pushing students to enter competitions and I wanted to be able to guide them through the process with my own personal experience. It has given me an insight into the pressures and time-management involved in competing, and sharing my experience will help prepare students for future success.”

The judging panel consisted of Elizabeth Armistead, Head of Make-up for Coronation Street; Neil Gorton, Special Effects Make-up Artist from Dr Who; Alia Raffia, Fashion & Beauty editor at Asians UK; and Sandra Excelby, the Chair of the National Association of Screen Make-up Artists and Hairdressers.

Gemma walked away with two crystal trophies and a Temptu Airbrush System, as well as £250 worth of ARTDECO products. She was also given the opportunity to work on a celebrity red carpet event with the ARTDECO creative team.
