Life as a student on a shoestring budget is tough at the best of times, but in the middle of a cost of living crisis and with bills having risen again, we’ve put together some tips to help you squeeze the best value out of every last penny.

Do the maths
When your loan drops into your account, add it together with any other income and take away all necessary spending - that includes rent, utility bills, phones, or anything else you might need to pay for.
After you've divided what's left by the number of weeks until your next loan, this is a good indication of what you'll have to spend weekly. Remember, try if you can to save a bit for unexpected expenditure!

Shop smart
We all know the temptation of a takeaway or dinner at a restaurant, but eating at home whenever you can saves you a lot of money.
If you buy and cook in bulk with your flatmates you can make further savings on grocery and energy bills. This also helps you to hone your own cookery skills, and best of all you’ll get to try everyone else’s signature dish!
If you’re looking for a new ‘fit before a night out, try charity shops and vintage kilo sales before anywhere else. Remember: fast fashion isn’t just bad for the planet – it usually ends up costing more in the long run!

Use all the campus facilities
Didn’t have time to eat before leaving the house? Our cafes in Moss and McIntyre House offer great value meals for students for breakfast and lunch, we offer free fruit and toast to all students in the mornings. If you’re around at the end of the day, take advantage of the deals at Cakes & Bakes!
When you’re looking for study resources, remember the library at Baskerville House has a huge range of fiction and non-fiction, and over 150 million titles that can be accessed online. Always check out our library catalogue before splashing out on books elsewhere, and remember to ask our librarians to order or reserve something we don’t have.

Find part-time work
Getting yourself a part-time job can be a great way to ensure you have a bit of a buffer for unexpected bills, or just to save for the occasional treat.
Our HIRED team are dedicated to helping you find employment. You can also sign up to Unitemps, who offer a great variety of flexible, temporary jobs available to help you get over those hurdles. They can even help you find something related to your course.
Try to make sure any work you do doesn’t interfere with your studies. If you feel yourself struggling to juggle all your responsibilities, you can always reach out to our student support services who’ll be happy to help you out.

Join the NUS – and check out other student apps
Getting yourself an NUS Extra card (now called a Totum card) will help with money off grocery shopping, and you can pick up other bargains through Student Beans, UNiDAYS, and a whole host of other apps!
In a number of other shops you can also grab a discount just by showing your student card, so it’s always worth carrying it with you when you’re out and about.

Our financial support package
This includes our free 5K for all UK full-time students starting in September 2025, our Kick-Start scheme (neither of these have to be paid back) and free fruit and toast in the morning for students. Read more about all here.

Student council tax and prescription exemption
Is everyone in your household a full-time student? Good news! You don’t need to pay any council tax. If one adult in your household is not a full-time student, you may be eligible for a 25% discount.
Full-time students are also able to claim free prescriptions through the NHS. Find out more about the HC2 form here.

Shop around for the best bank account
Banks are always looking for student customers so if you shop around, you can find some good deals. Many student accounts have interest-free overdrafts (look for this as a bare minimum), and others offer cash incentives to sign up. Money Saving Expert has some great tips on how to find the best bank account for you.

Scholarships, grants and more
See whether you’re eligible for any of our scholarships, fee waivers, or bursaries here.
If you’re an international student, check out what’s available to you here.
In extreme cases, there is limited funding set aside for students who need emergency cash. Speak to our Student Services team who will be able to help.
