Sports Therapy BSc (Hons)

'Above and beyond' university support

Being neurodivergent, Jai particularly welcomed the personalised support on hand during his sports therapy degree at University College Birmingham.

In fact, he described the support as nothing short of “above and beyond”.

As well as the smaller lecture groups and variety of learning methods available, university support included funding Jai to get a formal diagnosis and ensuring the right reasonable adjustments were in place for study.

“Being neurodivergent, I faced unique challenges, but they went above and beyond to help,” he said. “The personalised approach made a huge difference to my learning experience, as did the incredible support of the staff. They guided my development not just academically, but personally as well. This all allowed me to excel during my time at university.”

Jai was working at a sports injury clinic when the director – a former lecturer at University College Birmingham – told him about the degree.

“I chose to study here because of my director’s glowing recommendation,” he said. “He had great confidence in the support and quality of education.

“With my experience and his guidance, I was able to enrol onto the second year of the course – an opportunity that really stood out and is testament to the University’s flexibility and understanding of individual circumstances.”

After graduating in 2021, Jai found himself at a crossroads and decided on a career change. “As a graduate, I turned to HIRED for support and they were instrumental in helping me identify my skills and strengths,” he said.

“They worked with me to narrow down career options that suited my abilities and interests, giving me a clearer sense of direction.
“With that foundation, I took the initiative to push myself further. This persistence led me to secure a role as a caseworker with the police.

“The University gave me more than an education. It gave me the resilience and self-belief to tackle whatever life throws my way. My journey is proof that with determination, adaptability and the right support, it’s possible to achieve success, no matter how unconventional the path may seem.”
