By 2032, the IMI forecasts a shortfall of 16,000 qualified technicians in the UK (IMI, 2023).

Vehicle technicians typically earn £35k–£40k annually, offering solid pay and career stability.

Do you see yourself working with cars, fixing problems and keeping vehicles running smoothly? This Level 2 course is designed for students who want to launch a career in the automotive industry or gain valuable skills in vehicle servicing. It provides the essential foundation to succeed in the motor vehicle sector, combining both hands-on experience and theoretical understanding of routine maintenance and repair procedures for cars and light vehicles.

Industry fact: The UK automotive sector employs over 800,000 people and is rapidly evolving with new technology - from hybrid engines to advanced diagnostics - making skilled technicians more in demand than ever. On this course, you’ll cover everything from health and safety in the workshop to tools and diagnostic equipment, routine servicing, engine systems, chassis systems such as steering, suspension and brakes, and electrical and electronic systems.

Learning takes place in industry-standard workshops, giving you the chance to practise real-world skills such as removing, inspecting and replacing components, while also developing a clear understanding of how vehicle systems work. Alongside technical training, you’ll build employability skills to prepare you for progression into apprenticeships, further study or employment in the fast-moving automotive industry.

*On completion of this course, you will be awarded a Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair qualification.

Why choose this automotive college course?

  • BOOST YOUR SKILLS – You’ll gain practical experience working on vehicles, learning how to diagnose, maintain and repair common faults. This gives you real-world skills that employers value
  • PRACTICAL APPLICATION – Get hands-on training in fully equipped workshops using industry-standard tools and diagnostic equipment, just like in a real garage
  • RECOGNISED QUALIFICATION – Completing Level 2 is often the first step towards becoming a qualified mechanic or technician. It can open doors to apprenticeships, jobs in garages, dealerships or fleet maintenance companies
  • PROGRESSION - A Level 2 qualification sets the foundation for progressing to Level 3 or specialist training, which can lead to higher pay and more advanced roles.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

One of the most important things on our automotive courses is Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment and without the correct PPE, you cannot participate in practical activities - it's to keep you safe.

Firstly, all students must have steel toe capped boots, which you can buy once you have enrolled. These boots must be worn in all practical lessons.

Students on these courses must also have mechanics overalls.

Don't forget, you need to get your essential PPE bought and ready before your induction day.

Uniform, kit and tools

This course requires steel-toe boots, mechanic overalls, and tools, costing approximately £100*, depending on the items you purchase. Prices are subject to change each year – exact costs and information on how to order required items will be provided to you prior to enrolment.

Financial support with study costs (including PPE)

University College Birmingham offers a bursary scheme to help enrolled students cover costs, including:

  • Kit (including PPE)
  • Travel to college
  • Uniform
  • Other course materials
