Remaiya Parrish
Bricklaying Level 2/ Electrical Installation Level 2
Building skills for the future
Remaiya decided that making the journey into University College Birmingham rather than studying somewhere local was well worth it, given the reputation of the course and facilities.
“I knew I wanted to study here because it’s well-known for the quality of its courses – nowhere around where I live matched it,” she said.
While studying she struck up a great rapport with staff and students, firstly becoming a student ambassador and eventually helping out as a technician. During this time she also noticed big changes across campus.
“I’m based at James Cond, which is a brilliant facility, but I’ve noticed so many upgrades across campus over the last year that have helped improve the experience all students,” she said.
Moving on from the bricklaying course to electronics has allowed Remaiya to increase her skillset while continuing to study at UCB, and as it is a part-time course, she has been able to work on sites while studying.
“It’s great that I’ve been able to work and study at the same time, and in the long run I hope to gain more experience on site and combine the skills I’ve developed through my qualifications.”
