Clearing success stories

Many students join us through Clearing every year. Read our Clearing student stories to see how Clearing is the first step to so much more...

Taylor's Clearing story

"I always wanted to be a paramedic, and wanted to study my degree close to home at a university that offered lots of support, and would help me fulfil my goal of working for the air ambulance one day.

"When I went through Clearing, I was a little worried as I was clueless to what it was. But with support from the University, my experience in Clearing was amazing. Everything went so smoothly and I received my offer quickly. I had support to calm my nerves and it was a lot easier than I thought."

Annabelle's Clearing story

"I entered Clearing after being unsuccessful with the universities I had applied to. I had started to lose hope, but my dad reminded me that I could still go through Clearing and encouraged me not to give up on going to university.

"I chose University College Birmingham because Health and Social Care was what I really wanted to study. The course had no exams, which was a bonus for me, and offered lots of opportunities to help me work towards a career supporting people in their time of need. The staff were incredibly helpful and informative when I called, and Clearing was easier than I expected."

Annabelle has now graduated and is studying for a master's degree in psychology at University College Birmingham.

Alfies's Clearing story

"I applied to study finance and accounting at multiple universities, including local Russell Group universities, but was declined. I then applied to UCB through Clearing."

"First impressions mean a lot to me, and I was immediately made to feel comfortable by the course leaders and the Clearing staff. That experience played a big part in my decision to join UCB."

Clearing FAQs

What is Clearing?

Clearing is not just about missing your grades on results day. Far from it! You can apply through UCAS Clearing today if you:

  • Are worried about your results and need a back-up plan
  • Have changed your mind about what or where you’d like to study
  • Have not accepted or received any other offers
  • Are applying late (past the June 30 UCAS deadline)
  • Have missed out on the entry requirements for conditional offers

If any of the answers above sound like you, UCAS Clearing is your extra opportunity to secure a place for September 2026.

When does Clearing start and end?

UCAS Clearing for 2026 opens on Thursday 2 July 2026 and closes on Monday 19 October 2026. Courses can fill before the final UCAS deadline, so it is best to apply as soon as you have your results and are ready to make a decision.

Where can I find my Clearing number?

If you're eligible for Clearing, your Clearing number will be on the welcome page and on the 'Your choices' section of UCAS Hub.

Am I eligible to apply through Clearing?

You may be able to apply through Clearing if:

  • you are applying to university after 30 June
  • you have not met the conditions of your offers
  • you are not holding any offers, or have chosen not to accept the offers you received
  • you have changed your mind about where or what you want to study
  • you already have your results and are looking for a place for September 2026

Clearing is not just for A-level students. BTEC, T Level, IB, Access, mature, international students and others can apply through Clearing too.

For 2026 entry, the UCAS application fee is £28.95. There is no additional cost to use Clearing.

What courses can I apply to through Clearing?

You can check which University College Birmingham undergraduate courses have places left by clicking 'Find a course’ buttons on this page, from which you can search and view each undergraduate course page. You can also find vacancies on our courses using the UCAS search tool from July.

How do I apply?

If you are ready to apply, you can complete our online Clearing application form. Our Admissions team will review your details and explain the next steps.

If you want to speak to someone first, you can call our Clearing hotline on 0121 604 1040, request an early offer, ask us a question, request a callback or start a conversation with us on WhatsApp.

Before applying or contacting us, it is useful to have your qualifications, results and UCAS personal ID ready if you have one. This will help our team advise you as quickly as possible.

You can also visit our Clearing Open Day on Saturday 15 August 2026 to explore campus and get advice on your options.

How can I contact the Clearing team?

You can contact our Clearing team in the way that works best for you. Call our Clearing hotline on 0121 604 1040, request an early offer, ask us a question, request a callback or start a conversation with us on WhatsApp.

Our Admissions team can help you understand your options, check course availability, talk through entry requirements and explain your next steps.

Can I apply through Clearing before results day?

If you are waiting for your exam results, you will usually need to wait until you receive them before you can be officially accepted through Clearing. However, you can still prepare in advance by researching courses, checking entry requirements and speaking to universities about your options.

If you already have your results and are not holding an offer, you can apply through Clearing once it opens on Thursday 2 July 2026.

You can also contact our Clearing team before applying if you have questions, want to check whether you may meet the entry requirements or need advice on your next step.

I have accepted a place at another university, but would like to come to University College Birmingham. What do I need to do now?

If you are holding a confirmed place at another university but want to explore studying at University College Birmingham instead, you should contact our Clearing team before making any changes.

Our team can talk through your options, check course availability and advise whether we may be able to offer you a place.

You should not decline an existing offer until you have spoken to us and are clear on your next steps.

I have done better than expected. Can I still use Clearing?

Yes. If you have done better than expected and want to explore other courses or universities, you can use Clearing to find options. Before making any changes to your confirmed place, make sure you speak to the university you are interested in and get advice on your next steps.

Do universities accept lower grades through Clearing?

Clearing is about matching you up with a course that is available and suited to your aspirations, as much as it is your grades. So do not panic if you do not get the grades you had hoped for.

We will take other things into consideration such as your reasons for wanting to join the course, your passion for doing so, the UCAS points you have accumulated, your personal statement, and the way that you approach speaking with our Admissions team.

How do I cope with the potential stress of Clearing?

Make a plan. Just in case you do not get the grades you need for your firm or insurance choices. And prepare yourself for that possibility of things not going the way you’d like them to.

Start researching Clearing courses early so that you can create a shortlist and approach universities early too. They will no doubt have teams in place to answer any of your questions and help you along your Clearing journey.

If you are feeling stressed at any point, talk to your family members, teachers and tutors. They are there to help and support you through your Clearing journey too.

Being prepared and getting everything in order ahead of results day will make the day much less stressful – and mean that you are already sure of what you want to do should you not get the grades you were hoping for.

On the day you make the call, it's a good idea to have your UCAS Clearing number ready and know your tariff points for the course you're asking about. We might ask you a few questions about why you're applying and what appeals to you about studying with us, and you're welcome to ask us questions too, so have some ready.

There are also lots of mental health resources that you can access for free from organisations such as Student Minds – the UK’s student mental health charity. They specialise in student wellbeing and have created Student Space to help young people manage stress and anxiety, and find support.

How do I secure student finance after Clearing?

If you do accept an offer through Clearing, you will need to make sure you get your student loan.

The process for this will be different depending on if you are using Clearing for your first application, or if you previously applied for university, and for funding, in the initial application phase.

If you have already applied for funding, but have changed your university or course choice, you will need to let Student Finance know as soon as possible so that you receive your full entitlement. It is fairly simple to update your details:

  1. Log into your Student Finance account
  2. Go to ‘Your Account’, and select ‘Change your Application’
  3. Select ‘University / College and Course’ to make the change.

If this is your first application to university this year, and you haven’t applied for finance previously, you will need to apply as soon as possible to give yourself the best chance of receiving your loan in time for the start of your course.

You can register and apply at the Gov website also.

If you do face a delay in getting your funding, contact the university to let us know.

Students from Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales will need to apply or update their Student Finance details at their respective websites.

The GOV website is the best place to go for the most up-to-date information and guidance.

Does the £6,000 financial support need to be paid back?

No. Eligible UK full-time undergraduate students starting at University College Birmingham in September 2026 could receive £6,000 financial support to help with living costs, which does not need to be paid back.

This support can help with everyday costs while you study, such as food, travel, bills and study essentials.

How do I reply to a Clearing offer on UCAS?

You don't need to reply to a Clearing offer. Once you add a Clearing choice, it is then up to the university to confirm your place in UCAS Hub.

Why hasn't UCAS Hub updated?

UCAS Hub will update once the university makes a decision. If you've met the conditions of your offer, your place will be confirmed shortly.

Can I swap my firm and insurance choices?

Unfortunately, you cannot swap your firm and insurance choices. If you have decided that you now want to attend your insurance choice instead, you will need to go through Clearing. You need to check with your insurance choice university that they are able to accept you through Clearing.

I am holding a place at University College Birmingham, but wish to be released into Clearing. What do I do?

If you wish to be completely withdrawn from UCAS, or if you would still like to hold a place at University College Birmingham, but defer for one year, we can also do this for you by calling our hotline.
