Practical sessions for Year 10 and 11 students
These interactive sessions give you and your students the opportunity to explore our vocational college courses through practical, hands-on activities. Designed for Year 10 and 11 students, they offer an engaging introduction to a range of subject areas.
Gatsby Benchmarks – 3 (Addressing the needs of each pupil), 4 (Linking curriculum learning to careers) and 7 (Encounters with further and higher education).
What subject areas are available?
📅 When: Selected dates throughout the academic year (September–June)
🕙 Time: Sessions typically run from 10:00am–2:00pm
💷 Cost: Free of charge
🏫 Location: On campus at University College Birmingham. Where possible, sessions can also be delivered at your school – please enquire directly.

Have a Go: College of Food
Show your students how University College Birmingham can help launch their hospitality and catering careers with these exclusive kitchen taster days. Perfect for aspiring chefs, bakers and culinary professionals!
Example agenda:
Session one: Welcome and intro to UCB
Session two: Professional Chef practical
Session three: Bakery practical
Session four: Food and Beverage practical
*Students will have the opportunity to eat the food they have prepared.
Our College of Food Have a Go sessions are now fully booked for this academic year. If places become available due to cancellations, they will be released through the booking form below.

If your students are interested in chef or bakery courses, they may also be interested in our Saturday Academies. These multi-week programmes give Year 11 pupils the opportunity to develop practical skills and experience what it is like to study at University College Birmingham.

Saturday Academies
Looking for another way for your students to experience University College Birmingham? Our College of Food Saturday Academies give Year 11 pupils the opportunity to develop practical skills, build confidence and experience what it is like to study chef or bakery courses at UCB.

Have a Go: STEM Subjects
Get hands-on experience across a range of technical and STEM subject areas. Each session includes activities in Computing and the Built Environment, alongside one additional specialist subject: Applied Science/Automotive/Engineering.
Schools can choose from the available dates based on the specialist subject included. Computing or Built Environment activities may also be removed where they are not relevant to your students’ interests.

Session one: Welcome and intro to UCB
Session two: Computer science interactive workshop
Session three: Built Environment interactive workshop
Session four: Specialist workshop in Applied Science/Automotive/ Engineering
Groups of up to 25 students. Sessions usually take place on Fridays, with a limited number available on Thursdays.
Our STEM Have a Go sessions are now fully booked for this academic year. If places become available due to cancellations, they will be released through the booking form below.

Have a Go: Sport
A sport taster day gives students the opportunity to explore how our college courses can support progression towards a career in sport, fitness and nutrition. Students will meet members of our teaching team, take part in practical activities and develop an understanding of the skills used across the sector.
Activities may include sports coaching, fitness-based sessions and the use of our specialist sport and gym facilities.

Maximum of 20 students per school. If you wish to bring a larger group, additional places may be available on the same day. Please check the booking form for availability.

Have a Go: Education and Childcare
Our early childhood experiences shape who we are and maybe your students want to part of those experiences for others. Students can explore what studying Early Years is like with us, using our Simulation Suite and get an understanding early childhood development to see if the rewarding career within the education sector is for them.

Session three: What does UCB have to offer?
Groups up to 20 per school
Sessions will take place from 09:30 to 13:30 on selected Thursdays. Please use the button below to view which Thursdays these sessions will be taking place.

Have a Go: Aviation, Travel, Tourism and Cabin Crew
Do your students love travel, events or hospitality? With these careers. the sky really is the limit! From cabin crew, tour operators or hotels around the world, we will tour careers available from our courses, having fun, practical sessions in our mock plane and airport in our Aviation Suite.

Groups of up to 25 per school

Have a Go: Hair, Make-up and Beauty Therapy
Are your students thinking about a career in the beauty industry and want to try something creative and hands-on? Then join our fun and interactive sessions introducing you into the world of hairdressing and beauty treatments.

Can't attend an on-campus event?
If you can't attend one of our taster sessions on campus, we may be able to organise for our staff to come to your school or college. Subject to staff availability, we may be able to offer a bespoke taster session at your school.
