Student Safeguarding Support

All staff members at University College Birmingham are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our students.

Our staff play an important role in creating a safe and supportive environment for our learners. As part of this responsibility, they:

• Have a clear understanding of their safeguarding responsibilities

• Can recognise and are alert to signs of abuse, neglect and exploitation

• Help protect students from being drawn into extremism, radicalisation or terrorism

• Know how and when to report concerns

We understand how important it is for our learners to feel safe and secure, and we aim to create an environment where everyone feels valued and respected.

As part of our safeguarding practices, we also have a variety of initiatives in place. These include:

• We have a two-way information sharing agreement in place with West Midlands Police. The agreement is compliant with the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and Data Protection Act 1998. Its focus is to prevent and reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, as well as help identify appropriate support and intervention for victims or perpetrators.

• UCB is part of Operation Encompass, a police and education safeguarding partnership which ensures that we are notified if a young person has experienced domestic abuse. This enables us to provide the right help and support for the learner at the right time.

• We operate robust filtering and monitoring systems across all institutional devices and for anyone accessing our IT systems. These measures help to block harmful and inappropriate content while ensuring they do not negatively impact teaching and learning. Comprehensive monitoring is also in place, enabling our safeguarding team to identify and respond promptly to any concerns or potential risks.

At UCB, we have a dedicated team of trained and experienced safeguarding professionals who are here to support any student who is at risk, or may be at risk, of harm or injury. The team provides guidance, support and appropriate interventions to help ensure the safety and wellbeing of all our students.
