TWO-DAY DEGREE

A complete, full-value degree.
Just two days per week on campus.

New for September 2026 entry

What if you didn't have to choose between a degree and the other responsibilities in your life?

Ambition isn’t the barrier to university - cost and time are.

Our research shows that for many, it’s the financial reality and other responsibilities that put higher education out of reach. That’s why University College Birmingham has reimagined the degree.

Introducing the Two-Day Degree, a complete, full-time undergraduate or postgraduate degree. The same qualification, the same academic quality, delivered in a way that makes higher education genuinely more accessible.

Starting in September 2026, the Two-Day Degree will launch across seven courses - with plans to expand across a wider range of subjects in the future.

Balancing work, family and study?

Earn a degree with just two consecutive on-campus days a week and get up to £6,000 financial support from UCB.

Available on selected degrees starting in September 2026, the Two-Day Degree is a full-time qualification. We have just packed the on-campus timetable into two consecutive days.

How to apply

How will this benefit me?

  • Only two consecutive days on campus to make it easier for you to balance study with work and everyday life
  • Days for first year of courses are already timetabled, so you can plan in advance
  • Part-time work remains possible across the other five days
  • Caring responsibilities can still be managed at home
  • No year-round accommodation costs, just one night a week - only if you need it
  • Up to £6,000 Cost of Living Allowance plus Kick-Start funding for UK students to bridge the gap (undergraduates only)

Which courses can I choose from?

You can stay overnight at The Maltings halls of residence

How does it work?

  • Two consecutive week days, every week for three years

Your campus days are consecutive, for example, Monday and Tuesday or Wednesday and Thursday. All your campus contact time happens over two, consecutive days and will do for the whole of your course. The first year has already been timetabled, to help you plan. There may also be a flexible online tutorial during the week, but you will know well in advance.

  • One night's accommodation a week, if you need it

If you’re travelling from further afield, you can stay in our accommodation overnight and pay for a 24-week contract instead of a full academic year (42 weeks). You don't have to, it's just there if you need it for peace of mind. It also means you can experience campus life, but also go home to your family for the rest of the week. The choice is yours.

  • The rest of the week is yours

The rest of the week is yours, whether you need to keep a job, look after family or run a business. Your independent study, a minimum of 20 hours over the rest of the week, fits around your life, not the other way around.

Home away from home

If you do want to stay overnight at our halls of residence as part of your Two-Day Degree, The Maltings is your home from home.

You’ll be part of a friendly campus surrounded by supermarkets, cafés, green spaces and rail and coach stations - and staying over in one of Britain’s most exciting cities. As part of your shorter contract, you'll also have access to The Maltings communal areas, entertainment and sports facilities.

  • Student Rocio takes you on a tour of her room at The Maltings

Frequently asked questions

Students joining us in September 2026 can find out more information in the FAQs below.

Is this a full degree?

Yes. The University College Birmingham Two-Day Degree is a full degree - BSc or BA (Hons), a foundation degree (FdSc or FdA), if that's your route, or a master's degree. The course is exactly the same as our standard degree offer. We have just packed the timetable into two consecutive days a week, so that it’s easier for you.

Can I really do a degree in two days a week?

All teaching (lectures, seminars, labs, workshops) is timetabled into your two campus days. You'll also have independent study outside of those days. Some courses have an online tutorial on a different day. But the campus commitment is two consecutive days per week.

When will I know my timetabled on-campus days?

The timetables for on-campus days in the first year of our Two-Day Degree courses starting in September 2026 are already available. We will let you know your timetabled on-campus days for year 2 by Easter 2027 and for year 3, by Easter 2028. We will always make sure you have plenty of time to plan.

Will I have the same access to facilities, support and resources?

Yes, you will have the same access to our facilities, including our libraries and cafes. You are also entitled to the same, highly-personalised student support, including academic, financial and mental health and wellbeing support.

Can I come onto campus and use the facilities etc outside my timetabled days?

Yes, of course you can come onto campus and use the facilities anytime during the week, if you want to, not just on your timetabled days.

Will my exams fall on my timetabled on-campus days?

Your exams may fall on a different day to your timetabled on-campus days, but you will be notified about this at least four weeks in advance, so you can make the necessary arrangements.

What happens if I defer my place on a Two-Day Degree course?

If you accept a place on a Two-Day Degree course and, subsequently, request a deferral, please be aware that the Two-Day Degree format cannot be guaranteed for your deferred entry year.

Places on the Two-Day Degree are allocated on the basis of availability for each academic cohort. If you defer, your application will be considered alongside all other applicants for that year and we will confirm whether the Two-Day Degree option is available to you at that point.

What happens if I need to repeat a year with attendance?

The Two-Day Degree timetable is designed for students progressing through their course in the standard way.

If you are required to repeat a year of study with attendance, we cannot guarantee you will be able to continue on the Two-Day Degree schedule. This will depend on the timetable available in that academic year.

Does the Two-Day Degree apply if I choose to do a placement year?

Many of our courses include an optional placement year, which takes place in industry rather than on campus.

The Two-Day Degree timetable applies to your taught years of study, but the placement year itself operates differently - you will be working with an employer and are not subject to a university timetable during that period.

Importantly, when you return from placement to complete your final year, we cannot guarantee that the Two-Day Degree format will be available to you, as timetabling will depend on the cohort and course delivery at that time.

I like the sound of this concept, but my course isn’t on the list. Am I eligible?

At present, the Two-Day Degree is available on seven of our courses. However, the aim is to increase the courses the Two-Day Degree is available on in the future. Explore all of our courses, which are delivered to a 2-3 day timetable across the week.

Is the £6,000 Cost of Living Allowance in addition to my student loan?

Yes. The £6,000 (£5,000 for two-year FdA/FdSc undergraduate students) UCB support package is on top of your standard student finance entitlement, and it doesn’t need to be paid back. Find out more.

Please note: Postgraduates (master's students) are not eligible for the Cost of Living Allowance, only full-time UK undergraduates.

What if I can't make it to Birmingham every week?

Because your days are fixed and consecutive, you'll know your pattern in advance. If exceptional circumstances arise, speak to your academic team - our student support is set up to help you stay on track.

Do I have to use the accommodation?

No. Accommodation is available if you want it, but not compulsory. If you're close enough to commute both days without staying over, that's absolutely fine. If you’d rather stay in a local hotel, that’s fine too. But if you sign up to our accommodation, we ask that you commit for the 24 weeks a year. You can change your mind in years 2 and 3.

If your circumstances change and you want to stay in our accommodation full-time instead, you can change to a 42-week contract at any time. Just get in touch with our accommodation team and they will sort it out for you.

Where is the accommodation?

The Maltings is a 10-15 minute walk from Summer Row. It is located at Granville Street, Birmingham B1 1SB.

How much will I have to pay for my accommodation?

You will have a 24-week contract (for one night a week), paid in monthly instalments of £150 a month or £1,200 a year. There is also a £100 deposit, which is returnable at the end of the academic year.

For your night over, you'll just need to pay for any food and drink (you can use some of your £6,000 of support for this). We also have a pay-as-you-go laundry service at The Maltings, if you need it.

Will accommodation essentials such as bedding be provided?

Yes, we don't expect you to have to bring everything with you every week. You will be provided with bedding, a towel and toilet paper as part of your accommodation package.

You can use all the facilities in the kitchen, including the microwave for heating up food. Please note: no pots, pans, cutlery etc are provided.

All rooms have a bed, mattress, mattress protector, wardrobe, drawers, study desk and chair, curtains and booster heater. You can virtually take a look around here.

Will I be staying in a separate block to students in accommodation full time?

You will be staying with other short-term let students, but you will be very much a part of The Maltings community and can enjoy all the communal spaces, entertainment and sports facilities. Find out more.

Will I be staying in a different room each week?

You may be in the same room each week, but there's no guarantee as our Two-Day Degree accommodation is allocated on a week-by-week basis. Our friendly accommodation team will ensure you have all the information you need ahead of your arrival.

Is there parking at The Maltings?

We offer parking at The Maltings for the sole use of residents.

If you bring a vehicle, you will need to produce your driving licence, proof of ownership and insurance documents. The cost of parking is just £10 a week for Two-Day Degree students, covering you from the morning of day one until the evening of day two.

Priority parking spaces are provided for students with mobility issues.

Is there free Wi-Fi at The Maltings?

Yes, there is free Wi-Fi for you to use at The Maltings.
