University College Birmingham hosted a networking event marking its 20-year partnership with the Institute of Hospitality (IoH), where industry leaders and alumni discussed the challenges in hospitality and the need for collaboration among employers and with education.
Dan Lee, a University College Birmingham alumnus and MasterChef: The Professionals winner, reflected on the difficulties ahead.
"The future of the hospitality sector will be tough with increasing costs, but it is a field filled with creative individuals who will evolve and find new ways to adapt," he said. He stressed the importance of employers supporting young professionals by providing opportunities and mental health support rather than adding excessive pressure.
Guillaume Marly, also an alumnus who is now General Manager at the upcoming Waldorf Astoria London Admiralty Arch, emphasised the importance of continuous learning and strong leadership.

Industry representatives echoed these sentiments. Kirsten Price, People Director at The Belfry Hotel and Resort highlighted the importance of real-world experience.
"It's great to see students learning in a real-world environment and witnessing the future generation of hospitality in action," she said. "The partnership between us and University College Birmingham is important for placements and work experiences, helping students fulfil roles in the industry."
The event also recognised the hard work and passion of students.
Chris Eigelaar, Chair of IoH Midlands and Managing Director of The Belfry Hotel and Resort, presented awards to outstanding students Oliver Herrington and Sachini Rodrigo, who have demonstrated dedication to the hospitality sector.
Robert Richardson, CEO of the IoH, reinforced the significance of industry partnerships.
"Employers, educators, and industry professionals must work hand in hand to ensure that hospitality remains a viable and attractive career path. Through shared knowledge, training, and investment in young talent, we can overcome the challenges ahead."
