Accounting and Finance Professional Practice

Financial Accounting
The module aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of financial accounting principles, concepts and techniques used by financial accountants to record and present financial information to relevant stakeholders. It introduces the skills required to prepare, analyse and interpret financial statements. The module covers the principles of double-entry book-keeping including year-end adjustments and how to prepare basic financial statements for sole traders and limited companies.
Management Accounting
This module aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of the role of management accounting and its application in business. Accountants provide relevant financial information to managers and external stakeholders in the context of planning and controlling an organisation. This module introduces the principles and techniques to provide appropriate financial information for managers to enable them to make informed decisions on a regular basis. It provides you with the understanding of key concepts in management accounting including costing, cost-volume-profit analysis, break-even analysis, budgetary planning control, standard costing and decision making techniques.

Audit, Governance and Forensic Accounting
This module provides you with an understanding of the process of audit engagement, governance, forensic accounting and the elements of best practice concerning corporate governance. You will study the critical elements of audit process and the relevant ethical and regulatory framework. You will discuss key aspects of forensic accounting, audit planning and engagement including audit risk, internal control and the use of computer assisted technology, tools and techniques in auditing.
Business Analytics
This module aims to give you a thorough grasp of modern business analytic tools and their applications to business management. The module will cover a range of analytical tools and software relevant to roles across accounting and finance roles focused on analytics. The focus of the module is on enhancing your problem formulation and solving skills.
Business Law
Business Law equips you as an accounting and finance professional of the future with a clear understanding of the legal principles that shape corporate activity. You will explore the UK legal system and its impact on financial reporting, auditing, taxation, and corporate governance. You will be prepared to navigate legal issues that accountants and finance specialists face daily, from company formation and capital raising to insolvency, fraud prevention, and regulatory compliance.
Financial Management
The module will develop your understanding of the key principles underpinning the theory and practice of financial management. It begins with an exploration of the environment within which financial decisions are made with a particular focus on the nature, role and purpose of financial management. The module content broadly covers financing decisions and explores various sources of finance, cost of capital and capital structure.
Sustainable Management and Organisations
This module introduces you to key theoretical and practical aspects of managing people and organisations in a changing business context. You will learn how individual and team behaviours influence motivation, engagement, and performance, and how effective management and leadership practices contribute to organisational effectiveness and sustainability.
Taxation
This module will introduce you to the subject of UK Taxation and provide the core knowledge of the underlying principles and technical areas of the tax system as applicable to individuals, single companies and groups of companies, including an introduction to Double Taxation Agreements (DTAs) and Controlled Foreign Companies (CFC) Rules.
Work Placement
You will gain valuable work experience on a 48-week work placement. This is an exciting opportunity to put what you have learned into practice, broaden your experience and demonstrate your abilities to potential employers.

This final‑year applied research project module enables you to work with real‑time, live contexts drawn from industry, community, or professional practice. You will identify a contemporary issue, challenge or opportunity and develop an evidence‑based response through applied research and professional communication. The module emphasises authentic enquiry, ethical research practice, and professional judgement, supporting you to design, conduct and communicate research that has clear value beyond the classroom. Assessment is rooted in live outputs and reflective decision‑making, ensuring you can demonstrate originality, critical insight and responsible use of digital tools, including AI, within professional boundaries.
Corporate Risk Management
Corporate Risk Management is a comprehensive, systematic approach for helping an organisation to identify, measure, prioritise and respond to risks, which is critical when developing a company's strategy. The module gives you an opportunity to understand the implementation and application of Corporate Risk Management and develops skills which are applicable to a diverse range of organisations and scenarios.
Financial Reporting
This module will develop your knowledge of accounting standards and theoretical framework knowledge in the preparation of financial statements. You will examine key issues in international financial reporting and financial analysis and assess the fundamentals required by managers and analysts to understand, interpret and use financial information. The module will help you understand the financial reporting challenges of multinational companies. It will aim to give you the tools and skills to compare accounting regulatory frameworks around the world as well as to prepare and interpret consolidated financial statements. Alongside technical depth, the module integrates fintech and data visualisation, enabling you to apply blockchain to real-time reporting.
Leadership and Enterprise Strategy
Leadership and Enterprise Strategy provides you with an understanding of strategic analysis, strategic decision-making and strategic processes within organisations. You will delve into examining strategic management concepts and theories and how these work in practice, using organisational examples to apply and critique best practice.
Performance Management
This Performance Management module is about making decisions which ensure the most effective and efficient use of organisational resources. The module aims to develop knowledge and skills required by performance managers. It provides you with a grasp of techniques used by performance managers in planning, control, decision-making and overall performance evaluation of organisational activities. It focuses on information needs, technologies and systems necessary for efficient and effective performance management of organisations. Information gathered in this way is used to plan and control activities in order to ensure that key organisational objectives are achieved.
Trading and Portfolio Management
The module introduces you to the latest methodologies used by professional portfolio managers. You will study both the theory and practice of portfolio management and build on the techniques for portfolio selection. The theoretical part will examine the issues involved in constructing an investment portfolio, evaluating its performance, and adjusting its composition through time to ensure the performance remains optimal. It will also consider the use of derivatives in managing risk and international markets, global issue, risk and resilience. The module will provide you with hands-on experience of constructing and managing an equity portfolio using trading simulation software.

A-levels: Grade profile of CCC.
T-levels: A T-level graded Pass with a core component of grade C.
BTEC: Grade profile of MMM. This can be achieved from either an Extended Diploma or a combination of smaller BTEC qualifications.
Tariff: Other Level 3 qualifications are accepted at University College Birmingham for entry. A minimum of 96 UCAS Tariff points will be required.
Access to Higher Education Diploma: 96 UCAS Tariff points including a minimum of 15 Level 3 credits at Distinction.
GCSEs: GCSE/IGCSE maths grades A*-C (grade 9-4) or equivalent.

Tuition fees for home students
If you are a home student enrolling on a bachelor's or foundation degree course at University College Birmingham, the 2026/2027 academic year tuition fee for full-time study is £9,790. For part-time study, the fee is £4,895.
For 2027/2028 academic year tuition fee for full-time study is £10,050. For part-time study, the fee is £5,025.
The same fee applies to those enrolling on an HNC (Higher National Certificate) or an HND (Higher National Diploma) programme.
