Applying for accommodation couldn’t be easier

Accommodation prices have been frozen for 2020/21.

First year UK and EU students 

Process of application

  • View our accommodation page www.ucb.ac.uk/accommodation for details of options available or visit us at one of our University open days.
  • Submit your application using the personalised link which will be sent to you once you have confirmed your conditional/unconditional study offer. Alternatively, you can submit an application for accommodation via the link buttons below. 
  • Once your application has been submitted, you will receive an email confirming receipt of your application has been received. A second email will be sent within seven days acknowledging your application has been reviewed and is awaiting allocation.

Within our first year blocks at The Maltings, we have a mature block, which initially houses anyone above the age of 22. If you wish to be allocated in this block, please state on your application form.

Offers of accommodation

All first year Home, EU and overseas students will be guaranteed an offer of accommodation providing an application for accommodation has been received and University College Birmingham is their first choice.

Application Deadlines

  • Home/EU Students – 30 July 2020
  • Overseas Students – 31 August 2020
  • Clearing/Insurance – 31 August 2020

All students will receive their offer of accommodation via email, unless requested otherwise. To accept the offer, all students will have 7 days to respond via email or post with signed contracts and payment of a non-refundable deposit (£100). It is essential to regularly check your emails to ensure your offer is not cancelled.

If your offer of accommodation is rejected or cancelled, then subsequently require accommodation, you will be required to submit another application where you will be added to our queue to await allocation.

We do all we can to offer your preferred choice of accommodation, but this cannot be guaranteed. Allocations are not based on any protected characteristics (as defined by law). Requests to live with friends or single sex accommodation are not guaranteed and are subject to availability.

Room allocation process

We will begin sending offers of accommodation to UK and EU students from 1 April 2020 who:

  • Have successfully submitted an application for accommodation by the deadline
  • Hold a conditional or unconditional offer

We will begin sending offers of accommodation to UK and EU students from 15 August 2020 (following the universities' UCAS embargo) who:

  • Have successfully submitted an application for accommodation after the application deadline
  • Hold a conditional offer (which converted to an unconditional firm offer following confirmation of exam grades or equivalent qualifications via our Admissions team) or an unconditional firm offer

First year overseas students

International students joining the University for the first time will be offered accommodation in our halls of residence if:

  • UCAS and the University have received your firm acceptance of an unconditional offer at University College Birmingham.
  • Your £4,500 tuition deposit is paid.
  • The accommodation officer receives your completed residency agreement and deposit by the offer deadline.
  • You are unaccompanied (i.e. you do not bring any dependants, such as a partner and/or a child) unless agreed in advance by the University. We cannot accept any arrivals before the contract start date.

We will begin sending offers of accommodation from 1 April 2020 to overseas students who:

  • Have successfully submitted an application for accommodation by the deadline
  • Have been issued a CAS (exemption applies to those studying on our summer English course)

Continuing students

Continuing home, EU and overseas students are guaranteed an offer of accommodation providing an application for accommodation has been received by our deadline and you have not been subject to our disciplinary procedures, or owe money to the University.

Application deadlines

  • Continuing students – 31 March 2020

All continuing students will receive their offer of accommodation via email, unless requested otherwise. To accept the offer, all students will have 7 days to respond via accommodation@ucb.ac.uk or post with signed contracts and payment of a non-refundable deposit (£100) – transferable from accommodation during the current academic year. It is essential to regularly check your emails to ensure your offer is not cancelled.

As a returning student, you can request to be with friends – add this information to the ‘special requirements’ section of the application. All requests will be honoured on a first come, first served basis. 

If you are currently living in halls, you will not need to make any additional payment to secure your accommodation.

Current students who are going on placement are encouraged to apply at this time for when they return in February 2020. Please ensure you select the accommodation is for January 2021 (semester 2), giving a date you will return from your placement. 

Please note: Room numbers will not be issued. However, we will confirm what type of accommodation you have been offered. Special requests will be honoured subject to availability.

Postgraduate students 

Postgraduate students are normally allocated in their own blocks and/or flats in quieter areas of each site. New and continuing postgraduate students are subject to the same conditions as first year students. 

Erasmus students

New Erasmus+ students are subject to the same conditions as first year students.

Semester 1 students – September 2020 until January 2021
We will make an offer of accommodation to semester 1 students if your study offer is reflective of this need (i.e. single semester Erasmus+ programme), providing you have accepted your course offer and have submitted an accommodation application by the deadline.

Semester 2 students/January intake – January 2021 until June 2021
Subject to availability, we will make an offer of accommodation to semester 2 students provided you have accepted your course offer and have submitted an accommodation application by 18 December 2020.

Additional information

Under 18s

Student accommodation is an adult environment where most residents are ages 18 and over. Applicants studying in further education will be offered accommodation in our designated under 18, en suite flat at The Maltings subject to availability if they have submitted an accommodation application by the deadline.

Higher education applicants will be offered accommodation with students aged 18 and over who will not have been vetted. All bedrooms are single occupancy, you will share a kitchen and communal areas.

Semester 1 students – September 2020 to January 2021

We will make an offer of accommodation to semester 1 students if your study offer is reflective of this need (i.e. single semester Erasmus+ programme, undertaking a term of placement, completion of qualification), providing you have accepted you course offer and have submitted an accommodation application by the deadline.

Semester 2 students – January 2021 to June 2021

Subject to availability, we will make an offer of accommodation to semester 2 students provided you have accepted your course offer and have submitted an accommodation application by 18 December 2020.

Care leavers

The Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 defines a care leaver as someone who has been in the care of the Local Authority for a period of 13 weeks or more following their 16th birthday. Accommodation will be offered with the same criteria as any first year student. Accommodation during the summer periods will be available on a priority basis, however, you may be required to move rooms. You will need to submit a new application for accommodation for each academic year by the advised deadline.

If you have a disability, long term illness or mental health condition which may require adjustments, we can offer suitable accommodation to those with mobility, hearing or visual needs to ensure your experience within our halls of residence is as enjoyable as possible.

You will need to complete the ‘special requirements’ section of the application form or email accommodation@ucb.ac.uk with any relevant information that you believe is important for us to know. This allows us to make any reasonable adjustments you might need as far in advance of your arrival as possible.
