Frequently asked questions

What is the process for securing additional support if you do not have a diagnosis for a mental or physical health condition?

We can consider a range of supporting documents, e.g. referral letters, Form 8s or Form 9s from a previous setting (within certain parameters). Additionally, we can also provide guidance about how to obtain these, where appropriate.

When and how can students apply for financial support and what sort of support is available?

There is a wide range of financial support available at University College Birmingham, including travel support, meal support, childcare support, and assistance with uniforms and equipment. Students may also be eligible for a range of non-repayable bursaries and scholarships.

The best way to find information about the support available is to search for "Financial Support" on the relevant website (University, College, or Sixth Form). Further information will be provided at the SEND and Wellbeing Transition Day on Wednesday, 26 August. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact the Financial Support team at financialsupport@ucb.ac.uk.

I have an EHCP at college — what happens now that I am progressing to university?

When transitioning into Higher Education EHCPs will usually cease. Disabled Students’ Allowance can provide additional support for students; however, it does not offer the full range of support available under an EHCP. Additionally, if students have a care package as part of their EHCP then they will need to contact the relevant local authority to have the care package transferred.

How do students apply for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) and what happens regarding DSA when students first attend university?

You can apply for DSA via the student finance portal. DSA is a 3-step process (a) application including the uploading of supporting documentation detailing your condition, (b) Attending a need assessment and (c) responding to contact from the DSA suppliers regarding support.

Do students with an EHCP receive support from a mentor?

Not typically. Students can be supported in class by an Academic Support Worker and can also access support in the academic skills centre where applicable.

Is it too late to disclose an EHCP?

For students with an EHCP a consultation process is needed. Please contact your principal or case officer at your local authority to start this process.

What support is available for securing part-time work alongside a degree?

Students can access part-time work opportunities through Unitemps, our internal recruitment agency, which sources roles both within the university and with external employers. Students can also book appointments with our Hired team for support with finding and applying for part-time jobs. This includes assistance with CV writing, application forms, and interview preparation.

Where can I find out more about the support available at University College Birmingham for neurodivergent students?

Further information can be found by visiting our Disability and neurodiversity support page.

You can also speak with our team at the SEND and Wellbeing Transition Day on Wednesday 26 August.
