Additional changes may be made to the schedules before welcome week. You are required to attend your course induction session and other activities unless you have enrolled after these have passed.

Monday 21 September
Meet the nursing team and your cohort of students/Introduction to the department
Location: Moss House (MS), TBC
Time: 10am-12pm

This session offers an opportunity for you to meet the Mental Health lecturers and get to know the peers who will form your cohort throughout the programme. You will be introduced to lecturers and staff with expertise in Mental Health care who will support your academic and practice learning, and you will gain an overview of how the course prepares you for the role of a Registered Nurse (Mental Health). Importantly, this session begins the development of your professional identity, helping you to build supportive relationships with both staff and fellow students, and to establish the teamwork and communication skills that are essential when delivering safe, compassionate care in Mental Health nursing practice.
Wednesday 23 September
Meet the third year students and campus tour
Location: Moss House (MS), TBC
Time: 10am-12pm

In this session, our third-year Mental Health Nursing students will welcome you to the programme and share their experiences of studying and progressing through the course. They will lead an informal campus tour, helping you to familiarise yourself with key learning spaces such as lecture theatres, skills and simulation suites, and student support facilities. You will also take part in interactive activities designed to help you get to know your peers, build confidence, and begin forming supportive networks within your cohort. This peer-le session provides a valuable opportunity to ask questions, gain practical advice, and feel more confident as you start your journey into Mental Health nursing.
Introduction to Canvas, UCB resources and how to use them to support your studies
Location: Moss House (MS), TBC
Time: 1pm-3pm

This session will introduce you to Canvas, the University’s virtual learning environment, and the range of University College Birmingham (UCB) resources available to support your studies. Canvas will be your central platform for accessing module content, timetables, learning materials, assessment information and essential communications, and you will be expected to engage with it regularly to stay up to date with your programme. You will also be introduced to key support services including the Library, Centre for Academic Skills and English, Health and Wellbeing, and student support teams, all of which are designed to help you develop your academic skills, manage your workload and maintain your wellbeing throughout the course. This session will help you understand how to effectively use these resources to enhance your learning and succeed in your Adult Nursing degree. There will be bookable sessions with each of these services later in the induction
Mandatory Expectations for good health and character and professional practice
Location: Moss House (MS), To be confirmed - Lecture theatre for 100 students

Students are required to read the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code thoroughly, as it underpins the professional standards, values and behaviours expected of all registered nurses. You must familiarise yourself with its principles before signing your declaration of good health, good character and fitness to practise, as this confirms your commitment to upholding these standards throughout your training and future career. This session will also recap key pre-enrolment requirements, including Occupational Health (OH) clearance and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks, highlighting their importance in ensuring you are safe, suitable and prepared to work in practice settings with patients and the wider healthcare tea

Guided study time to complete e learning for health and UCB student services sessions

You are expected to complete your e learning for health mandatory training within the induction period and to book on to university online sessions (DICE) (CASE) (Library) (Health & wellbeing team). You will be signposted to this
Welcome week activities and support sessions
Throughout welcome week, we've arranged a programme of support sessions and activities to help you settle into university life, meet other students and discover the services available to you.
You'll have the opportunity to meet teams including Disability and Neurodiversity Support, Mental Health and Wellbeing, the Centre for Academic Skills and English (CASE), and the Library. You'll also have opportunities to connect with the Guild of Students (the student union at UCB), find out more about student life, and take part in activities organised by the Student Engagement and Success Team.
