Outreach and Widening Participation

University College Birmingham is committed to widening access to Higher Education. We offer interesting and exciting ways for young people who may not be considering university as an option to explore student life and raise aspirations.

97.9% of our young, full-time undergraduates are from state schools. Of these, 13.8% are from areas designated as low participation neighbourhoods
On our foundation degree courses, 99.4% of young, full-time students are from state schools, and 15.6% are from low-participation neighbourhoods
19% of our mature full-time foundation degree undergraduate students are from low participation areas within the West Midlands

Bringing the real world into the classroom

Our outreach events are designed to ensure you get the most out of the event. We include hands-on workshops, guest speakers and lectures are delivered by industry experts. This is your chance to find out more about and experience different career paths to see what suits you, discover what Higher Education is and what part it could play in making your dream career a reality.

It is my view, that this is exactly the sort of work that university 'outreach' teams and organisations such as Aimhigher should be doing as it adds significant value to young people’s post 16 education and impacts directly and significantly on student aspiration and confidence.

Although these events are free, if you wish to amend or cancel your booking you must provide at least two weeks’ notice prior to the event otherwise a cancellation fee of £15 per student will be incurred. Amendments need to be made by email. A £15 cancellation fee will also be charged per student for any "no shows" on the day and can be passed on to students at teacher’s discretion.

Our events are funded by the National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP), which aims to encourage more young people into Higher Education (HE). It brings universities together to provide coordinated outreach to schools and colleges.
