The old definition of “making it” is dead.

For decades, we were told that leadership was a ladder to be climbed- a game of tenure where 'years served equalled capability'. But the world has changed, and today’s organisations measure success through purpose, impact, and responsibility, not just profit.

In his first insight piece, Carl Bennett, Deputy Head of Business & Enterprise Department for the Business School, takes a deep dive into what success looks like to the leaders of tomorrow.

"In an era of AI-driven restructuring and shifting employer expectations, leaders who rely on the ‘old manual’ are already behind. We don’t need leaders who have just 'been there before': we need those who can think differently and act with integrity in the face of ambiguity," explains Carl.

This is where a modern MBA, especially one aligned with the Graduate Route, becomes a catalyst for future-ready leadership.

Why leadership success has changed

Today’s organisations expect leaders who can:

  • navigate uncertainty

  • make ethical, socially responsible decisions

  • respond quickly when knowledge becomes obsolete

  • work confidently across diverse teams

  • integrate sustainability into long-term strategy.

This shift has redefined what “capable leadership” looks like and why MBA programmes must evolve to meet it.

From theory to authenticity

Writing an essay about leadership is not the same as practising it. Traditional, theory-heavy models no longer prepare graduates for the complexity of modern business.

The MBA at University College Birmingham (UCB) replaces outdated approaches with:

  • authentic assessments that reflect the complex reality of modern business

  • reflective practice: developing self-awareness as a strategic advantage

  • skills that translate: the ability to learn fast, apply faster and continuously adapt.

"Success is no longer measured by commercial outcomes, but by decisions that stand up socially and environmentally."

Carl Bennett Deputy Head of Business & Enterprise Department - Business School

Industry as the classroom

Leadership cannot be learned in isolation.

UCB’s MBA embeds industry engagement throughout the programme, giving students opportunities to:

  • test frameworks in real business environments

  • work on live projects

  • question and adapt ideas based on employer feedback

  • build confidence through practical experience.

This approach ensures graduates are not just knowledgeable - they are employable.

Diversity as the context

Diversity isn't a module, it’s the environment students learn in.

Better decisions come from broader perspectives, and the ability to work across difference is now a non-negotiable leadership skill.

The MBA’s collaborative, multicultural learning environment helps students:

  • strengthen communication

  • build cultural intelligence

  • develop inclusive leadership behaviours

  • understand how diverse teams drive innovation.

Responsibility as an imperative

Modern leaders must navigate:

  • supply chain ethics

  • sustainability

  • long-term value creation

  • environmental, social, and governance (ESG) frameworks.

Success is no longer measured by commercial outcomes, but by decisions that stand up socially and environmentally.

The Graduate Route MBA: for pioneers, not traditionalists

Our Graduate Route MBA isn't for those looking to fit into an old system. It’s for those ready to build new ones- leaders who can:

  • respond quickly when knowledge becomes obsolete

  • ask better questions, not just provide answers

  • act with integrity under pressure

  • innovate in uncertain environments.

Leadership isn't about having all the answers -it’s about asking better questions, at the right time, with the right people.

Purpose, impact and responsibility are now the defining markers of leadership success. The MBA at University College Birmingham prepares graduates to lead differently - with agility, authenticity and ethical clarity.
