Welcome and induction information

Welcome to University College Birmingham

Whether you are joining us as a new student or continuing your studies, we want to make sure you get off to a flying start. On this page, you will find your course-specific induction information, together with the information on additional welcome activities happening throughout the week. 

Please note: where applicable, new Top-up (Level 6) student information will be shared with returning student information.

Induction information for new students (Level 4)

Further information specific to your course, including induction activities, any uniform/kit requirements and our Kick-Start scheme, is available below. Additional changes may be made to the schedules before welcome week. You are required to attend your course induction session and other activities unless you have enrolled after these have passed.

Meet your teaching team and classmates

Join your Personal Tutor and Programme Lead, Jayne Hackett, for a welcome talk covering your timetable, course information and other important details for the start of your studies.

The session will also include a range of interactive online activities:

The tree of hopes and fears: A group activity where you will build a tree of hopes and fears, share your thoughts about starting university and get to know your fellow students.

CES discussion board: Take part in the Getting to Know You, Getting to Know Us discussion on the BA Childhood and Education Studies online programme site in Canvas.

This is a live online session and we encourage you to attend where possible. A recording will be made available on the BA CES Level 4 programme site after induction for anyone who is unable to attend live.

You will also gain access to the Childhood and Education Studies (Online) Onboarding Hub, which contains information and resources to help you become a successful online learner.

Welcome to the new academic year! Whether you're returning to UCB or joining us as a new student, your lecturers have arranged activities to help you prepare for the year ahead. If you're studying a Top-up course, please follow the Level 6 (final year) induction information below.

Welcome back!

Grab a coffee and join your CES Level 5 Personal Tutor, Jane Bradford, for a relaxed and informative return session. There will be a recap of key information about your second-year programme and timetable, and some fun, interactive online activities to help you reconnect and ease back into study after the summer break:

  • 🌞 Summer Snapshots
    A light-hearted activity where you upload or describe one image, object or moment from your summer that connects, even loosely, to education, learning or personal growth.

  • 🧭 The Study Safari
    A fun academic refresher where you’ll find and share one academic source on a relevant topic and post a tip for managing reading loads on the CES Level 5 discussion board.

This will be a live session, and your participation would be greatly valued – especially as you’ll be working in teams later in the year. A recording of the session will be available on the BA CES Level 5 Programme site for anyone who cannot attend live.

You will also gain access to the Childhood and Education Studies (Online) Onboarding Hub.

To view the recommended books and journal articles for the modules you will be studying as part of your course, search for your course or module name on the dedicated page for the reading lists at the link below.
