Do you believe university education is only for the wealthiest few, or those with the highest grades? At University College Birmingham, we feel higher education should be accessible to anyone, from any walk of life, and the narrative of exclusivity is one we’re aiming to change.
Recognising that everyone’s lived experiences are different and grades are only a small part of what makes a good student, we believe nothing should stand in the way of anyone looking to achieve their potential.
With our Contextual Offer scheme, we’re widening participation to those who have experienced challenging or difficult life circumstances, but are eager and ready to study at university.
Through a combination of lower entry requirements and robust eligibility criteria, this inclusive admissions initiative breaks down barriers to higher education, putting it within the reach of students who may never have thought there was a place for them.

Am I eligible?
You could be eligible for a Contextual Offer if you:
- Live in an area of low progression to higher education
- Attend a school or college with below-average performance
- Are the first in your family to attend university
- Have spent time in care or are estranged from your parents
- Have caring responsibilities
- Have refugee or asylum seeker status
- Have a household income below a defined threshold
Each application will be considered on its own merit, with contextual criteria assessed on an individualised basis.
There are no set targets with regards to those admitted with a Contextual Offer, but there is an expectation that adopting contextual admissions in the future will contribute to the University’s ongoing, strategic commitment to widening access and participation as outlined in our Admissions Policy and Access and Participation Plan.
If you have any queries about Contextual Offers, please contact headmissions@ucb.ac.uk
To be considered for a Contextual Offer apply to university as normal, either via UCAS or through our direct application form, and we will be in touch.
£5k to support your studies
Once you have your place as a new higher education student with us, you’ll be eligible for our Cost of Living Allowance.
This is £5,000 cash to help you with everything from food and bills to gym membership and transport - which doesn't have to be paid back.
You'll need to be a full-time UK undergraduate starting in February or September 2026 and paying your tuition fees with a student loan.
You will also receive up to £800 through our Kick-Start scheme, which helps with the cost of course materials and equipment for your studies.
For more information and other ways we can help, check out our Financial Support page. The cost of living shouldn't stop you reaching your goals.
