Why Birmingham College 

Birmingham College is the innovation of a collaboration between University College Birmingham (UCB) and Sichuan Normal University (SICNU). Within Birmingham College there are six programmes across the areas of Business and Computing. MSc Computer Science is one of the two programmes, the other being MSc Enterprise Management, which provide Postgraduate study. All programmes within the college bring together the expertise of each institution and produce a highly refined and considered programme which platform graduates to succeed in their careers.

Students on Birmingham College's programmes will be taught by leading academics from both UCB and SICNU and receive a truly global education and international outlook.

Starting a Managing a Business

The aim of this module is to provide you with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge of setting up, managing or growing your own venture. You will learn about the entrepreneurial mindset and how your own management style can influence the growth and direction of your business. You will develop a toolkit of business start-up concepts including finance methods, business planning, market research, human resources, marketing and legal, including registering your venture. You will investigate several high profile and successful business start-ups as well as learning from businesses who got it wrong, so you don’t make the same mistakes. You will have the opportunity to undertake a free Enterprise 8-week start-up programme alongside the main degree programme.

Creativity and Innovation

With the fast pace of change and uncertain times, creativity has never been more important. The aim of this module is to provide you with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge of creativity and innovation, including how to manage your own creative personality and how to drive your ideas through the organisation. You will cover the impact of rapid digital change, intensifying global competition and how creativity stems from the environment and culture of your organisation. The module will draw on theories of creativity and innovative cultures and examine the sociological and economic, as well as looking at theories of the firm in relation to design and composition for innovation. You will also examine the barriers to creativity and reflect on a range of case studies that demonstrate the impact of innovation on a worldwide scale.

Leading for the Future

As the world enters the fourth industrial revolution, you don’t want to get left behind. This module focuses on a wide range of concepts that prepare you to lead an organisation through a time of rapid change and disruption. We will focus on you as an ethical leader, developing values of sustainability, well-being and flexibility for your team as well as examining how digital transformation will impact on your business and on the lives of your customers. Interconnectedness is at the heart of Industry 4.0, and we will examine the rise of social enterprises and the ethical consumer and how innovations in artificial intelligence, augmented reality and robotics can improve your venture’s ability to be agile and constantly evolve.

The Entrepreneurial Decision Maker

Entrepreneurs need to be great decision makers. In many cases the buck will stop with you, and you won’t have a huge team around you to share the risk. This module teaches you about decision-making theory, examines how to create a team of effective decision makers and gives you the diagnostic tools to formulate, assess, screen and reach the required outcome. You will also learn how to evaluate previous decisions, so you don’t make the same mistake twice. Finally, you will examine data sources and learn how to gather and manipulate information to reach a balanced business decision.

Applied Masters Project

This module extends and develops your knowledge and ability in focusing upon, and preparing for, industry research. It introduces you to the disciplines of research techniques and data analysis as well as the design and execution of a research project. The project can take various forms including a traditional dissertation, generating a new enterprise start-up plan, developing a business or marketing campaign, or proposing new processes/systems/products/target markets. The aim is to develop your skills and expertise in the essential research tools you will need for both successful postgraduate study and as a self-employed entrepreneur or manager of the future.

Entry Requirements 

Academic Entry Requirements: Meeting at least one of the following is sufficient

  • Domestic Full-time Bachelor's Degree (Dual Certificate) ≥ 70%

  • Overseas Undergraduate (Certified by Ministry of Education) ≥ 70%

  • Domestic part-time undergraduate (dual certificate) ≥ 75%

  • Domestic bachelor's degree or associate degree ≥ 75% require at least 2 years of relevant work experience

NB: If the average score does not meet the standard, admission may be reduced at discretion based on outstanding personal introductions, recommendation letters, or honours received. There are no restrictions on applicants' undergraduate academic backgrounds for the Master of Business Administration and Master of Computer Science programs. Applicants from diverse academic backgrounds are welcome to join, aiming to stimulate interdisciplinary thinking and effectively enhance academic English skills while deepening professional knowledge.

English Language Requirements

Meeting at least one of the following is sufficient

  • IELTS overall score of 6.0, with no individual section below 5.5 (score accepted for splitting)

  • TOEFL iBT Overall Score 72 (Reads 18; Listening 17; Speaking 20; Writing 17) (Accepting Scoring Methods)

  • TOEFL iBT (new version) with an overall score of no less than 4.0 and no section below 3

  • TOEFL Home Test (New Edition): Overall score not less than 4.0, no section below 3

  • PTE Academic English Exam: Total score 59, 59 in each section

  • LanguageCert total score 65, with 60 in each section

  • Duolingo Total Score 105 (Read 100; Listening/Speaking/Writing 95)

  • ELLT total score 6, with 5 in each section

  • MUET Level 4

  • CET-4 (CET-4) score of 500 or above

  • CET-6 (CET-6) score above 450

  • Pass UCB’s Internal English Language Test

Language exemption requirements: In English-speaking countries such as the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Ireland, degree holders do not need to provide proof of English proficiency.

Upload graduation certificate and degree certificate. The English version of the certificate in China must be stamped by the study institution or archive storage institution; for overseas degrees, a "Certificate of Degree Authentication for Overseas Academic Qualifications" issued by the Service Center for Scholarly Exchange of the Ministry of Education is required.

Upload transcript: Both Chinese and English transcripts must be stamped with the official seal of the study institution or archive management unit. If you have an overseas degree, provide English transcripts.

For students who have not graduated, upload an enrolment status letter, in Chinese and English and stamped with the official school seal. Students must commit to obtaining the official graduation certificate and degree certificate before an unconditional offer can be issued by UCB.

Upload CHSI Certification Report. Previous graduates: Provide the "Ministry of Education Diploma Electronic Registration Record" and "Online Degree Verification Report"; fresh graduates: Provide the "Ministry of Education Online Student Status Verification Report."

Upload proof of English proficiency: Required IELTS, TOEFL, or other recognized English language test scores.

Preliminary Document Review

After submitting your application, University College Birmingham will conduct a preliminary qualification review of the materials submitted by the applicant. 

Interview and Assessment

Applicants who pass the preliminary qualification review and meet the requirements will be invited to participate in the independent admissions interview organized by Sichuan Normal University. Applicants will be notified of date and time directly.
