Owen John Phillips
Taking every chance
Owen’s passion for computing has been with him since primary school, and after completing the first stage of his diploma, he couldn’t wait to embark on the next step.
“I loved computers since about the age of six, and after visiting a UCB open day in year 10 I was determined to get onto this course,” he said.
“The coursework-focused approach appealed to me, and the staff were instantly warm and welcoming on enrolment day.”
Owen has thrown himself into student life, looking for opportunities to improve his skills and employability by making extensive use of student support:
“I’ve recently been accepted onto the In2STEM programme, and I can’t wait to expand my knowledge and make connections in the tech industry,” he said.
“I’m also part of the social mobility business partnership, which offers insights into the intersection of business and technology, and the Wordskills Website Development Competition. The FE Hired team have been invaluable in helping me secure these opportunities.”
As he completes the second stage of his diploma, Owen is hopeful that these experiences will help him to take the next leap in his educational journey:
"I’d love to go onto a degree apprenticeship in computing, ideally in a role where I can continue learning through real-world experience while earning a formal qualification. I want to gain academic and industry knowledge simultaneously,” he said.
