University College Birmingham students showcase their talents at International Day of Birmingham celebrations

Students from University College Birmingham (UCB) have been showcasing their culinary skills at the International Day of Birmingham (IDoB), a major city-wide celebration that brings together organisations, businesses and communities to celebrate everything that makes Birmingham unique.

As a major sponsor of the event, University College Birmingham is proud to support the annual celebration, which recognises the city's creativity, culture and global connections. This year's programme sees Birmingham's historic Council House transformed into a hub of activity, welcoming visitors from across the region to take part in a wide range of experiences celebrating the city's identity and heritage.

Two students, Darcey Hurst and Zachary Sealey, were selected to represent University College Birmingham at the event, gaining hands-on industry experience while engaging directly with members of the public.

Real-world experience at a major Birmingham event

The opportunity came after event organisers approached University College Birmingham to showcase the skills and creativity of its students as part of the celebrations.

Throughout the event, the students prepared and sold a range of products at the University's stall, including cupcakes, shortbread and chocolate lollipops, giving them valuable experience in food production, sales and customer engagement.

The experience reflects University College Birmingham's commitment to practical, career-focused education, providing students with opportunities to apply their learning beyond the classroom in real-world environments.

Celebrating Birmingham's culture and community

International Day of Birmingham was established to celebrate the city's people, places and culture, while recognising Birmingham's connections with communities around the world that share its name. The event has grown into a major annual celebration of civic pride, bringing together organisations from across Birmingham's arts, culture, food, media and business sectors.

For University College Birmingham, involvement in the event was an opportunity not only to support the city but also to showcase the talent and professionalism of its students.

"I am extremely proud of our students for having the opportunity to represent the college at the International Day of Birmingham celebrations,” said Daniel Tennant, UCB’s Head of College of Food & Tourism.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to take the skills and knowledge they have developed in the classroom and apply them in a real-world setting. Preparing products for sale and engaging with members of the public will provide valuable experience in professionalism, teamwork, customer service and enterprise.

“It is particularly special that our students are able to contribute to an event celebrating the diversity, culture and community of Birmingham. As a world-renowned culinary arts institution, we are proud to play our part in showcasing the talent, creativity and dedication of our students.

“I’ve been looking forward to being involved in the International Day of Birmingham and representing UCB,” said Darcey.

“The event will help me develop my confidence, communication and customer service skills.”

“Taking part in the International Day of Birmingham gives me the opportunity to experience a real industry event,” added Zachary.

“I will be able to develop my teamwork and communication skills, while learning more about Birmingham’s diverse cultures and communities.”
