Roberto Damico
Creating food that's out of this world
Roberto worked in professional kitchens in Italy since the age of 15, but in deciding to move to Birmingham in 2018, his studies piqued an interest in food science that has informed his career plans since.
“My original aim was to improve my employability in the catering industry, but this objective changed. The more I learned about the science behind nutrition, the more I wanted to work in that area,” he said.
While studying, Roberto completed a placement at a laboratory in Nottingham – an experience that cemented his passion for the science of nutrition.
Since graduation, he has taken a huge step towards fulfilling his career ambitions by moving to Adelaide, Australia, where he is completing a master’s degree focused on the creation of foods for space travel.
“Now, I research the sustainability of growing plants in controlled agriculture, preparing the way for future Moon and Mars habitats that will require farming to sustain humans in space,” he said.
“But the support and understanding of my lecturers at UCB was crucial to my making this decision. They always believed in me and made my time in Birmingham really special.”
