Dominic Hanna
Having a ball in industry
After achieving his degree, alumnus Dom’s career has taken off, but he’s still close to the university where it all began.
“When I attended the open day at UCB I immediately connected with the lecturers. I knew it was where I wanted to be.
“Once I started, smaller classes really suited me as I could have in-depth conversations with my lecturers and get to know them on a personal level, which helped me maintain my admiration for them and what they had done within my field of study.”
During the course of his studies, Dom made extensive use of the award-winning support, buying course essentials with his Kick-Start funds and finding work through HIRED.
“I was already part of the University’s basketball team and gained experience putting on events when I found the placement opportunity with the Birmingham Rockets,” he explained.
“This set me up brilliantly, as I’ve continued to work with them since graduation and also secured a role as a graduate sports therapist right here at UCB, where I work pitch side during fixtures at The Maltings.”
In addition to his work with the University's teams, Dom has carved out a rewarding career as a group fitness instructor for elderly and disabled people, improving their quality of life and helping them to stay as active as possible.
In this role, he's able to combine his theoretical knowledge with the techniques he honed on placement to make a real difference to people's lives.
“None of this would have been possible if I hadn’t made the most of those activities around my studies, helping me to forge a career from my own passions.”
