Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Support Service

The Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Support Service at University College Birmingham provides a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space for students and staff to be heard and supported.

Our trained specialist advisers offer free, independent support to anyone affected by:

  • Sexual harassment, violence and misconduct
  • Domestic abuse
  • Stalking
  • Spiking

It doesn’t matter when or where the incident took place, support is available to you. Our service is open to students of all genders, sexualities, and ages, including those currently on a suspension of studies. We also support current staff who have been affected.

Our approach: Empowering you to make informed choices

We know that everyone's experience is different. That's why our support is tailored to your unique needs and situation. We work independently of academic schools and departments, creating a space that is safe, impartial, and focused entirely on you.

Our advisers are fully trained to provide a response that is:

  • Confidential
  • Non-judgemental
  • Proactive
  • Impartial

We are here to listen, validate your experience, and support the choices that feel right for you, at your own pace and on your terms. There is never any pressure to report or take a particular action, and you are always free to change your mind.

How we can support you

Here’s what we can offer:

  • A safe space to talk - share as much or as little as you feel comfortable.
  • Clear information about your options, including reporting to the university or police.
  • Support with university processes, such as making a complaint or engaging with disciplinary procedures.
  • Practical academic support, like extensions or help with mitigating circumstances.
  • Guidance around emotional, mental, physical, or sexual health concerns.
  • Safety planning and practical support to help you feel secure.
  • A personalised next-steps plan, created with you to reflect your wishes and wellbeing.
  • Information about therapeutic options, including counselling and external services.
  • Referrals to other specialist services when needed, to make sure you’re fully supported.

Accessing the service

To access support, please complete a referral via our reporting system. Appointments are available in a way that works best for you. You can meet with an adviser:

  • In person at our private spaces in Baskerville House or The Maltings student accommodation
  • Remotely, via Microsoft Teams or phone call
  • Whatever you choose, we’re here to make the process as comfortable and supportive as possible.

Confidentiality

We are a confidential, student support service, which means that we will not share anything you tell us with your academic school, tutors, family, or the police without your explicit consent.

The only exception is if we believe you or someone else may be at serious risk of harm. In these cases, we may need to share limited information, but we will always discuss this with you first, wherever it is safe and possible to do so.

Please note: If you are under 18, we will have a legal obligation to share certain information with relevant services to ensure your safety and wellbeing. We will always try to involve you in this process and explain what is happening.
