Baker Laura becomes Dawn Foods first student ambassador
Laura Gibbons, a final-year Bakery and Patisserie undergraduate at University College Birmingham (UCB), has been appointed Dawn Foods’ first Student Ambassador.
The new role is part of the company’s campaign to nurture a new generation of bakers and support them in developing contemporary takes on established bakery recipes.
Dawn Foods has a close association with UCB and Laura was put forward as a potential ambassador by Assistant Dean for Bakery, Dawn Gemmell. She will work with Dawn at its Evesham-based site on “Creating New Traditions”, a new European-wide initiative which will see established sweet bakery products being given a twist for the next generation. As part of the campaign, the contemporary new takes on traditional sweet products will be launched as bakery recipes in early 2017.
A passionate young baker, Laura is keen to work in bakery product development when she graduates. She already has first-hand experience with an award-winning artisan bakery where she helped develop a range of sweet products, including almond choux buns and the lemon and poppy seed drizzle cakes, which are now a firm favourite with customers.
Jacqui Passmore, marketing manager UK and Ireland at Dawn Foods, said: “UCB has seen the number of students taking its respected Bakery and Patisserie course double in the last few years as TV programmes such as ‘The Great British Bake Off’ and ‘Great British Menu’ have inspired young people to bake and cook professionally.
“As a result, we are seeing a new breed of young bakers coming to the fore with some exciting ideas that reflect how we eat today.
“Laura is keen on new product development and has some refreshing ideas. We’re delighted to have her on board in her final year for a mutually beneficial partnership.”
Laura said: “I love coming up with new ideas and looking at how I can improve recipes and products. Bakery is constantly evolving and changing with market trends, consumer demands and preferences so it’s an exciting industry to be in.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to work with Dawn Foods, as the company is so well known in the bakery industry for the quality of its products. Maybe I too will be helping to set new bakery trends for the future as part of Dawn’s ‘Creating New Traditions’ campaign.”
