Apply to study

A step-by-step guide

International Students Step-by-Step Application Guide

We know that navigating admissions processes can often be complicated. That’s why we’ve created a step-by-step application guide for international students. All the information and guidance you need about joining us can be found below:

We also know that you may have lots of questions about studying overseas with us. Just email international@ucb.ac.uk, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible. You may also wish to speak to one of our international recruitment officers. They can also support you with your application and journey to University College Birmingham.

Step 1: Choose your programme

International students can choose from a wide range of career-focused programmes. A full list of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes can be found on the pages below:

Each page will contain details of our international tuition fees, but you can also find a summary table here.

We are currently accepting applications for programmes starting in September 2026 and February 2027.

Step 2: Check entry requirements and deadlines

The entry requirements vary depending on the programme level, the subject and the qualifications you hold.

For most of our programmes, there are two elements of requirements: academic and English language. Some programmes will have additional requirements, such as work experience and interviews. Additional requirements, if applicable, can be found on individual programme pages.

  • Use our country pages to check the academic qualifications we accept from your country.
  • Use our English language requirements page to check the English language requirements. If you do not meet our standard English language requirements, we have UCB Go (Pre-Sessional English courses) to help you improve your language proficiency and meet our English language requirements.
  • Use our programme pages to check additional requirements.

Step 3: Submit an application

Submitting an application is easy.

You can apply via UCAS or by submitting a direct application to University College Birmingham.

To apply direct via the UCB Portal, click here

We aim to process most applications within 5 working days of receiving them. However, it may take us longer to process applications during busy periods or if your application requires additional consideration.

Our application deadlines can be found here.

Step 4: Receive the outcome of your application

If you receive an offer from us, congratulations! Please carefully review the offer letter and let us know if you have any questions.

If your application is unsuccessful, we will automatically consider you for other programmes and suggest the options to you.

Step 5: Meet you offer conditions

If your offer is unconditional, we will be in touch to guide you through the next steps. If your offer is conditional, the next step is to make your offer unconditional.

Depending on the information you provided in your application, your offer may have the following conditions:

  • Share final academic transcripts
  • Share evidence of English language proficiency or apply for UCB Go (Pre-sessional English course).
  • Additional requirements, such as an interview.
  • Deposit payments – international students must pay at least 50% of their tuition fee to receive their CAS and be eligible for enrolment. Please find additional guidance below:

Deposit payment details

You are required to pay 50% even if you do not need a student visa to study with us – this does not apply to students who are fully supported by a sponsor recognised by University College Birmingham. Some students may need to pay higher amounts; if this applies to you, we will contact you.

We understand that meeting all the offer conditions may take some time, as you may need to wait for your exam results. Therefore, it is ok for you to provide the supporting documents to meet the conditions gradually. If you applied directly, you can send these to international@ucb.ac.uk. If you applied using a recruitment agent, you can send the documents directly to your agent.

You are encouraged to pay your deposit as early as possible. There is no need to wait until you satisfy any other offer conditions.

We strongly encourage you to pay close attention to our Important Deadlines.

Our online payments page has all the information you need about making payment.

By making payment, you automatically agree to our International Deposit Payment Policy.

Step 6: Qualify and apply for scholarships

International students are eligible for action and merit-based scholarships.

You can qualify for early payment scholarships of up to £4,500 just by meeting payment deadlines! All details can be found on our Early Action Scholarship page.

You can also apply for one of our merit scholarships – these require a separate application and are worth up to the full amount of your tuition fee! Full details of all our merit scholarships, plus application links, can be found on our Scholarships page.

Please note that merit scholarships and parts A and B of the Early Action Scholarship cannot be combined.

Step 7: Apply for accommodation

If you have received an offer from us, you are eligible to apply for accommodation at The Maltings. The Maltings is our university-owned accommodation located in the heart of Birmingham. It’s the perfect place to spend your first year as a student and you will benefit from:

  • Secure and safe environment
  • En suite rooms
  • 15-minute walk from campus
  • WiFi and bills included
  • The chance to make friends from around the world

You can secure your room with a deposit as low as £100.

If you pay your accommodation fees in full, you will also qualify for a 15% discount.

If you would like to experience living at The Maltings before the start of your programme, you can apply for UCB Ahead, which provides free accommodation for up to three-weeks.

Step 8: Get your CAS and apply for your Student Visa

If your offer has become unconditional and you need a UK student visa to study at University College Birmingham, you’ll be invited to go through the CAS process when the CAS application window is open, which is usually several months prior to your programme start date.

We’ll advise you on how the CAS process works, the documentation you need to provide and the tasks you need to complete. Some students are required to pass additional pre-CAS checks, such as an interview. If this applies to you, you will be contacted.

You will be emailed our Student Visa Application Guide once you receive your unconditional offer letter.

Once you receive a CAS, you are encouraged to carefully check your documentation and make a visa application as soon as possible.

Some students may be asked to attend an interview with UKVI. You are strongly encouraged to read our Credibility Interview guide and prepare for your UKVI interview accordingly.

A reminder that you must have paid at least 50% of your tuition fee to receive your CAS.

Step 9: Complete online enrolment

Enrolment is a two-step process at University College Birmingham, which includes online enrolment and on-campus enrolment.

Once your CAS has been issued, you will be emailed about online enrolment. You must complete the steps outlined in this email as soon as possible. Without completing online enrolment, you will face longer waits at on-campus enrolment.

Step 10: Prepare for your arrival

In the build-up to your programme start date, we will contact you about UCB Ready – our online event designed to help you prepare for life as an international student with us. We strongly encourage you to attend this event, as you will also have the opportunity to ask us any questions you have.

You will also need to secure accommodation. Check out step 7 for details about university-owned accommodation. If you are thinking about renting privately, check out our rental guide.

Step 11: Complete your enrolment on campus

When you arrive in Birmingham, you must complete your on-campus enrolment as soon as possible. Full details will be provided via email.

Step 12: Enjoy your studies!

Once you are fully enrolled, you can look forward to starting your studies and attending our welcome and induction events – details of which will be provided via email.
