
Overview
The Turing Scheme offers funding to support students in gaining global study and work experiences. The University has successfully secured funding from the Turing Scheme for the academic year 2025/26. The Turing Scheme funding is available to support UCB higher education students with study, volunteering and work placements abroad.

Who is eligible?
To be eligible for Turing Scheme funding, students must meet all of the following criteria:
- Be registered at University College Birmingham and enrolled in a recognised undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme (both UK home and international students are eligible)
- Have secured a UCB-approved international placement outside of the UK (such as study exchange and work placement abroad) with activities of 14 days or longer during the current academic year. Virtual or remote activities are not eligible.
- Must not be receiving funding from another source that covers the full cost of the overseas placement.
Students are not eligible if they are either:
- Studying an online degree remotely from outside the UK
- Permanently studying at an overseas campus of UCB outside the UK
Recent Higher Education graduates may be eligible if they undertake and complete a UCB-approved work placement within 12 months of their graduation date, subject to funding availability. Graduates should contact the International Office to confirm their eligibility and check funding availability prior to applying.
Please note: priority of funding is given to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Where can I go?
Turing Scheme offers funding for study, volunteering and work placements taking place in any destination outside the UK, but students must follow official foreign travel advice. The red and orange zones are NOT permitted by UCB for Turing Scheme usage.
How much can I get?
The funding provided to successful applicants will contribute towards the general cost of living abroad. The funding amount depends on the destination, placement length and your individual circumstances:

** Placement durations may include weekends and national holidays, as well as days spent on the outbound journey to the placement destination from the UK and the return journey.
Additional funding may be available for students from disadvantaged backgrounds or who meet the UK government's special education needs or disabilities criteria for additional support. Find out more about the funding here.
When will I receive the funding?
You will receive the funding in two instalments:
· 80% will be paid at the start of placement upon submission of all required documents to comply with Turing funding requirements; and
· the remaining 20% will be paid upon successful completion of your overseas placement and submission of all required documents to comply with Turing funding requirements.
