Excellent teaching goes hand-in-hand with excellent facilities and ours are nothing short of world-class thanks to our ongoing investment. Providing real-life, industry gold standard working environments, they are a big part of why our students have a real edge when they finish their studies.
Students gain hands-on industry experience preparing and serving everything from fast food to silver service in our training restaurants – the Atrium and the Brasserie - that enjoy a great reputation with the public and professionals alike. The Atrium proudly holds a Highly Commended AA College Rosette and UCB has Centre of Excellence status.
Food Science Labs
Our Food Science and Innovation Suite incorporates two specialist kitchens, a bespoke sensory evaluation room, a pilot plant for product development and other cutting-edge food science facilities. All laboratories have been designed with the help of the food industry and replicate the environment a student will work in after graduation.
Bakery and Confectionery
We have our own on-site baking and product development laboratories, with everything from the latest industrial ovens, high-speed mixers and dough and flour rheology testing technology to specialist chocolate production and tempering equipment. Our Cakes and Bakes shop sells a wide range of bread and baked goods made by our students.
Health Simulation Suites
Our health hubs allow health and social care and nursing (new for 2020) students to experience the full range of settings they are likely to encounter in real-life practice, from simulation equipment to clinical treatment areas. At the new Moss House building, there will be a six-bed hospital ward with simulation manikins where students can practise their skills.
Business, Travel, Tourism
Our purpose-built trading room for business and finance and accounting students is due to open in 2019/20. With Birmingham being the top location in the UK for SMEs, budding entrepreneurs can get their ventures off the ground with mentoring from UCB’s Enterprise Hive. UCB is a Institute of Travel and Tourism Centre of Excellence.
Salons, Spa, Aesthetics
Our spa has hair and beauty therapy salons, sports therapy clinics, a spa pool, a steam room and a sauna. Aesthetics resources include cryotherapy machines (fat freezing) and high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). Students learn on-the-job at UCB’s new, open-to-the-public Aspire Aesthetics clinic using products and treatments from top brands.
Specialist Hair and Make-up
We have two fully-equipped make-up studios, as well as a special effects studio and a prosthetics studio to ensure students have all the right skills they need for a career in TV, film, photography and theatre. We also have a photographic studio at Summer Row, plus additional facilities at nearby Richmond House.
We have excellent sports injury clinics, a strength and conditioning suite, a 35-metre indoor running track for speed and strength work and a gym with the very latest treadmills, strength and cardio equipment. Sports students also have use of Avery Fields, Bournville Rugby Club’s revamped training ground.
