Financial support available for college students

We know your finances and financial future are important to you. That's why we try and give you as much advice as possible about what it will cost for you to study at University College Birmingham and the support available to you.

On this page you will find details about college course fees and information about what support you may be eligible for as a further education student with us, including bursaries and help with the cost of travel, equipment and other essentials.

What is a bursary?
A bursary is an extra form of funding that can help cover many of your costs during your studies – and you don't have to pay any of the money back!
Please note however that not all students will be able to get a bursary.  To qualify, you must fulfil certain criteria related to factors such as your household income or personal circumstances. Full details of the eligibility criteria for support available to our college students can be found in the relevant sections below – please read through this carefully before you apply.

How to apply

Students can apply for financial support for the 2025/26 academic year from 1 August 2025.

Returning students: Please note you will need to reapply – funding does not carry over automatically into the next academic year.

Applications for all financial support for our college students are done online via our financial support portal. The first time you use the portal, you must register using your student ID number. When applying, you must provide evidence of your household income, so please have this ready.

  • Applications are through the portal only. We do not offer paper forms or accept email submissions of evidence.
  • All communication about your application will be via email, so please check this regularly.
  • We aim to process applications within 10 working days. This may be longer during peak times, or if there are any issues with the evidence and information you provide.
  • Funding is not guaranteed, so we encourage students to apply as soon as possible.

For more information, check our handy guide below. You can also view our policy document:

Course fees

College courses are free for students up to the age of 18, provided you meet the necessary residency criteria and your course is eligible for Government funding. If you are over 18, you may still be able to get help with your course fees if you meet certain criteria.

For full details of who does or does not need to pay for their course fees, please visit our College Fees and Funding page.

Frequently asked questions:

Can I pay my tuition fees in instalments?

If you do have to pay course fees, you can either pay in full at enrolment, or payment can be made in four equal instalments:

Level 1 and 2 courses – the first instalment must be paid when you enrol, then three further instalments are due in November, February and April.

Level 3 courses – instalments are due by the end of October, January, March and May.

Can I apply for a student loan to cover the cost of my tuition fees?

If you are aged 19 or over on the first day of your course and want to study a full Level 3 qualification, but are not entitled to fee remission, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan.

This is a non-means-tested loan and is available from the UK Government to pay the tuition fees of full Level 3 qualifications (course exclusions apply) starting after 1 August 2016. The loan is paid directly to UCB to cover the cost of your tuition, and does not have to be repaid until you are earning more than £25,000 a year.

For more information, please visit the Advanced Learner Loans section of the GOV.UK website.

What do I need to do if my employer is going to pay my tuition fees?

If your fees are being paid by your employer, please bring a letter on headed paper from your employer confirming this and clearly stating who the invoice should be raised to.

Where can I go for advice about Further Education tuition fees?

If you have any questions about the information on this page, please contact our Finance Department on 0121 232 4013, or you can walk in and speak to a member of our office on the fifth floor of Baskerville House.

Uniform and equipment

University College Birmingham can provide support for students on our courses that require specialist uniform or equipment.

Students who are eligible for support only need to pay a £50 deposit and we will cover the rest of the cost of the specified kit or equipment, which can save you up to £300! See full details below:

What support is available?

We can provide uniform and equipment support for those studying courses in the following areas:

  • Catering/Professional Cookery
  • Hospitality
  • Bakery
  • Hairdressing
  • Beauty Therapy
  • Theatrical and Media Make-up
  • Brickwork
  • Plumbing
  • Carpentry
  • Construction Multi-Skills
  • Electrical Installation

We can also provide specific equipment support for sixth form students enrolled on courses studying A-level maths, further maths or Level 3 core maths.

If you are awarded support, we will tell you how to order your uniform and equipment at that time. We strongly encourage students to wait until being awarded funding, rather than buying their uniform or equipment in advance, as we may not be able to reimburse these costs.

Please be aware that any student who has equipment funded by the College and who subsequently withdraws from their course before the first week of December will either need to return their equipment or repay the cost.

Who is eligible?

You must be a first year student on one of our further education courses listed in the section above. Your course must be full-time and require you to attend a minimum of 2 days per week.

In addition, your household income must be below £35,000, or your household is receiving one or more of the following benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Tax Credits
  • Universal Credit
  • Pension Credit

For full details of all eligibility criteria, please read our FE Bursary Support Policy.

Free college meals

University College Birmingham is able to provide free college meals for all students aged 16-18 who meet the eligibility criteria set by the UK government.

If you are not eligible for free college meals but your household income is below £27,000 per year, we may still be able to provide you with support. See full details below:

What support is available?

We will provide £3.50 credit per day for the days you attend college. This will be loaded onto your student ID card and can be used to buy meals at our campus food outlets.

Please note that you are required to apply for free college meals via our financial support portal.

Free Meal Transitional Protection Arrangements

If you had free meals at school or college during the last academic year, you can continue to receive these, although you may need to supply us with evidence from your previous provider.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for free meals, the UK Government states the following:

  • You must be aged 16-18 on 31 August at the start of the academic year; or
  • You must be aged 19+ continuing on a study programme you began while aged 16-18 (i.e. 19+ continuers); or

In addition, you must be a UK resident and be receiving (or have parents who are receiving) one or more of the following benefits:

  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • The guarantee element of State Pension Credit
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Child Tax Credit (provided the recipient is not entitled to Working Tax Credit and has an annual gross income of no more than £16,190 as assessed by HMRC)
  • Working Tax Credit run-on – paid for 4 weeks after someone stops qualifying for Working Tax Credit*
  • Universal Credit with net earnings not exceeding the equivalent of £7,400 per year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)

* Note: This only applies to the Working Tax Credit run-on, which is paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit. Working Tax Credit itself is not a qualifying benefit for free meals, and students/parents receiving Working Tax Credit are not entitled to this support.

You will need to provide evidence of your household's award of the above qualifying benefit(s).
