A chance open day visit convinced Harley that University College Birmingham Sixth Form Centre was the place to pursue his dreams of becoming a doctor.

“I live quite far from UCB, so it’s a pretty long commute,” he said.

“When I visited, the sixth form wasn’t even open, but I just loved the feel of the place, and the staff and facilities really sold it to me.”

With the lofty goal of getting into medical school, Harley has been working hard to ensure his grades are as good as possible, and he’s been glad of the wealth of support available from both the college and wider university.

“It’s not been an easy journey, but the support has been exceptional from my teachers and student services,” he said.

“The fact we’re integrated with the university is great as it means you can access help there too. I’m now even an officer with the Guild – how many sixth form students can say that?”

Harley is hopeful his experiences have prepared him for uni, and none more so than the recent trip to Singapore.

“One of my chosen universities allows me to have a year studying abroad. I feel like Singapore really helped me gain an idea of what to expect when I travel,” he said.

“Commuting to UCB was a leap of faith, but it was so worthwhile.”
