Student life at our college and sixth form

We're about much more than learning - thrive in your student life

Your time at our college or sixth form is much more than learning.

It's also about the friendships you form and the activities you can get involved in. It's also about feeling supported, knowing that you always have someone to speak to and help guide you during your studies.

Our student support goes that bit further too. We provide everything from help with getting to college through to a free breakfast in the morning - as much as we can to ensure you thrive and enjoy your student life at UCB.

Get involved - from the start

The great thing about becoming a further education student at University College Birmingham is the many ways you can make friends and get involved right from the start - before your studies even get underway.

Once you are enrolled, get down to WelcomeFest, the chance for students to make friends, take part in action-packed activities and get stuck into some free food at our multi-cultural street festival.

There are also pop-up events you can get involved in throughout the year, including celebrations for Chinese New Year, Iftar and One World Day, and ways to make your mark on UCB as a whole. For example, college and sixth form students got to vote to name our new James Cond food trailer!

College and sixth form students can join our clubs and societies

Enrich your studies, build your confidence

Student life at University College Birmingham means lots of enrichment opportunities - ways to build your life skills and give you more confidence.

  • Sign up to achieve your Duke of Edinburgh Award, which is open to 14-24 year olds and will build your life skills and resilience through volunteering, physical activity and expeditions.
  • Get involved with organising sport events and clubs and societies. Visit the Guild of Students clubs and societies page and click on the Under-18s tab to see what you can join, or set up your own!
  • Take part in competitions with other colleges, for example, sports, catering, gaming and the World Skills challenge.
  • Become a subject student rep or a campus rep, helping highlight and showcase what is going on in terms of safety, space and security at individual campus buildings.
  • Get into volunteering - we work with Birmingham Volunteering Service Council and organisations such as The Multibank and St Basils to help students get involved with supporting their community.
