Phil Hunt

Lecturer in Engineering and Sustainable Construction

Phil brings over 22 years of industry experience and more than two decades in education to his role as Lecturer in Sustainable Construction and Engineering. Having started out as an apprentice in engineering, Phil understands first-hand the skills employers value today and those needed for the future.

For the past 20 years he has specialised in Building Services Engineering, teaching across Construction Management and Civil Engineering while collaborating with multiple universities and professional bodies such as CIBSE. He has played a key role in shaping courses from Level 4 through to degree level, ensuring they reflect the evolving needs of the sector.

Phil is passionate about the role of innovation and energy efficiency in modern construction. He highlights that building services — from plumbing and electrical systems to HVAC, refrigeration, and renewable technologies — account for around 60% of new-build project costs, making the discipline central to sustainable design.

Currently, his focus links directly to the West Midlands’ net zero targets, preparing students to meet the challenge of delivering low-carbon heating, energy-efficient homes, and the next generation of building systems.
