"With over ten years of experience in the NHS, most of my career has focused on community neurological physiotherapy. I’m particularly proud of my unique way of teaching Motor Control - a topic many find challenging - through using karate demonstrations!"

My students call me Jay. I’m an HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) registered Physiotherapist, a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and also a Member of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Neurology (ACPIN). I specialise in Neurological Physiotherapy, particularly within community settings. Within physiotherapy, my specific interests include movement disorders, clinical reasoning, motor control, neuroplasticity, and exploring the role of faith and hope in neurological rehabilitation. I teach on UCB’s BSc Physiotherapy course, where I aim to make complex neurological concepts accessible and engaging. I’m particularly proud of finding a fun and engaging way to teach Motor Control, a topic many find challenging, using karate demonstrations!

With over ten years of experience in the NHS, most of my career has focused on community neurological physiotherapy. I’ve been deeply involved in supervising new physiotherapy graduates and undergraduate students on placement, which has given me a solid understanding of how to support learners at every stage. My clinical background allows me to bring practical insights into my teaching, helping students to connect theory to real-world practice, develop empathy and communication skills, and appreciate the importance of teamwork and professional conduct.

I’m most inspired by my students and patients, as well as by ground-breaking studies and publications in the field. I always tell students that studying the nervous system, its pathologies, and rehabilitation isn’t as hard as it seems - it’s all about building on a few key concepts. I advise my students to establish a study routine and organise their workload from day one - it’s the best way to stay ahead.

I love working with learners from diverse backgrounds, nurturing their growth and bringing out their best, and it was the diversity of staff and students at UCB that first inspired me to teach here.

Outside of work, I train in Karate (I hold a black belt) and I also practice Yoga. I enjoy wildlife photography, knitting, crochet, and I’m learning to play the piano. As well as English, I speak Turkish, Uzbek, and Arabic.
