"I’ve worked in the NHS, social care, voluntary, and private sectors, and spent eight years as a Senior Clinical Trainer in the NHS, so I bring a wealth of clinical insight and practical knowledge to my teaching here at UCB."

I am a nurse (RN1) registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) with over 30 years’ experience, working across acute and community settings with both adults and children. My interests and expertise include mentoring and coaching, research, managing acute and chronic conditions, and Schwartz Rounds. I teach on the BSc and FdSc Health and Social Care courses here at UCB, bringing a wealth of clinical insight and practical knowledge to my teaching.
Throughout my career, I have worked in health & social care, as well as the voluntary and private sectors, and spent eight years as a Senior Clinical Trainer in the NHS. I have also taught in schools, colleges, and universities, which means I understand the different ways students learn and how to support them best. I am incredibly proud of my own journey from nursing into academia. After many years in clinical practice, moving into teaching has let me share my experience and passion for healthcare in a new and meaningful way. My background helps bridge the gap between textbook learning and actual practice, enabling students to grasp complex concepts and prepare confidently for real work environments. I am also passionate about using simulation to enrich learning and bring real healthcare scenarios into the classroom.

Recently, I have presented at national conferences in educational research and healthcare. I am studying for a Professional Educational Doctorate at the University of Wolverhampton, and I also serve as an external examiner for nursing programmes at Leeds Trinity University. Additionally, I’m a member of BERA (British Educational Research Association), a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and I volunteer with Birmingham Hospice.
What inspires me most in healthcare is the profound impact compassionate, skilled care can have on individuals and their families, and teaching at UCB allows me to share that passion with students. I strongly believe in the power of empathy, critical thinking, and lifelong learning within our profession. I enjoy mentoring future healthcare professionals and helping them to grow into confident, competent practitioners ready to meet the challenges of an ever-evolving field. Seeing students connect theory to practice and develop their own passion for care is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.
I really enjoy meeting the diverse students at UCB, who bring their own life experiences, skills, and knowledge to the classroom. Students particularly enjoy the practical elements of our courses, such as our simulations and roleplay sessions, and they also value meeting experts with lived experience who co-deliver modules and share their own professional perspectives with the group.
Outside of work, I volunteer for a greyhound rehoming centre, walking and fostering dogs. I love reading, gardening, and crafts, and I am currently learning how to make jewellery and stained glass panels. My favourite book is The Girl Who Climbed Everest by Bonita Norris, and my favourite film is My Brilliant Career. An unexpected fact about me is that I was once an extra in the TV series Crossroads!
